My understanding was that A1 was the first number plate ever issued & may not reside on a car in a museum somewhere.
If not what WAS the first number plate issued - Google will tell me but you'll probably beat me to it!!!!

I thought that Reg number was in Beaulieu ?

An old B-Class.
I like surprises - when I buy a car I just wait and see what number I get.

I did once have a personalised plate in Australia 'RWQ 200' - my initials and it was on a 200 series Landcruiser. My wife's car was "BWQ 180" she had a 180 A-class Merc.

I don't get the obsession with contrived personalised plates. Something like YA65 LEY = Yabsley......reeks of desperation. I knew the guy & he had worked out in 2001 (when the new system came out) that he wanted that plate.

According to Wiki:

1970. The Dunlop company took ownership and rights to "A 1". The plate was put onto a Daimler limousine that was used to transport VIPs to and from the Dunlop factories.
1975. The plate was used for a brief period on the Director of Engineering's car, a Mini. The tyre division later took ownership and was used for promotional purposes, including the marketing of the Denovo "fail-safe" wheels.

Up here if you want to stand out don’t buy a personal plate... some are so contrived it’s just sad.

I did buy BL08 CAT as soon as it came out and it’s still on the smart.

Well, my plate means absolutely nothing. It presented itself to me free so I adopted it. A3 ESL, can't make anything of that, doesn't even have one of my initials in it :D

My last ML had a personalised plate on it when I bought it as an MB approved vehicle but when I collected the ML the plate had been taken off it (it was A1 ???). When I checked the plate on line it was on a Mercedes E class so I guess someone in the dealership wanted it. I should have made a fuss but at the time I was too excited getting the ML.

Worth a fortune if your name is Abe and you own an SL or a Lincoln. Immediately advertise it for squillions.

I am waiting for Audi to bring out an A3 electric SL, wish they would hurry up :D

Dateless plates can be useful.

I don't remember how long ago... when a pal of mine looked at buying a used S Class with very low miles that was just pre face-lift from a non-MB trader - apparently the face-lift changes were very minor. The asking price was easily 1/3 less than MB's forecourt prices. He showed him a book containing cheap "dateless" plate numbers and sold him a reverse (numbers/letters) one for £100 as part of his deal and they re-registered it and fitted it to the car. He paid £13.5K for his car (and plate) - I thought it looked immaculate. The cheapest one on the MB forecourt was £38K.

My J40 JDL has been in my cars for 19 years (who’d have thought), mainly as I can’t remember anything much ...

My first one I bought in ‘93 and it’s still on the same vehicle :)

Well, you’ve always got a nice nest egg sitting there if you ever need it, John. You never know when someone with more money than sense might want it and make you an offer you can’t refuse!

Only one of ours has a personal number plate and it will stay on that car for its lifetime.

When I bought my SL I wanted a private plate and nearly bought V8 DTX from DVLA but whilst thinking about it someone else took it (weirdly they live in the same town as me!), I bought S8 DTX instead.

Can I ask why DTX ?

My wife has a Nissan Skyline R34GTT and as I no longer have my Skyline, she has the personal plate off it that I bought in a DVLA auction - R34GTT.

It only means something to someone that knows about Skylines, but it is unique!
