When my son and I had identical cars (Alfa 3.0 litre GTVs) we thought it would be fun to have similar plates. The pair of them cost £500. Our surname is Noon. We kept them. Mine is on my old SL, his is on a new BMW.

Can I ask why DTX ?
My initials are DT and I don't have a middle name, I was just perusing the DVLA website and chose this one. Lately I have been thinking of putting the SL back on its original 04 plate.

When personalised plates were first allowed on Malta, one guy with a Beemer had BMW 320. Problem was, when he sells the car and buys, say, a Merc, he has to keep his plate! That was the law.

The Government actually makes up the plates - embossed aluminium with a hologram identifier. You have to go to Floriana and collect them. So there are no 'contrived' plates. If your tax, insurance or Vrt (laughingly patterned after the UK Mot) lapses, the hologram/plate number can alert the authorities and your plates can be removed. No plates, no use of car. If seen without plates, the car is confiscated. Good system.

The best I've seen are: FUN 1, FUN 2 and FUN 3 - all the same family owned.

I've never been one for vanity plates... but.. I had a quick look the other day and I could get myself "CH55 AMG" For about 800 quid..

My Initials are CH and this would work well for the SLK 55 AMG I want to buy.. :D

I'm sorely tempted. Buy the plate before the car they said... be grand they said.. :?

The question is, will it increase in value? If it won't then it's just an indulgence... but if it's likely to grow in value it could be a better investment than any of our "friendly" (?) banks and building societies.

I had K10 WRX on my Impreza, paid £180 for it and sold it with the car for an extra £500

My current plate P3 AJB I paid £700 for with the proceeds of WRX and it is worth £3k (apparently)

I think they'll go sooner or later so I wouldn't put money into one thinking it would make money. I've quite a few of them but can see the market ending with other ways of tracking cars and the end of personal transport as we know it...:(

Meh.. I wouldn't buy anything like that to consider an investment.. Who knows. I would indulge for 800 odd quid though..

So is it £800 or £1000? It seems to have increased in value since you typed the 2 posts, obviously a good investment ;):p:D:D

I paid very little for mine 21 years ago, means nothing to most folk, but those who know me know its mine. Its been on 3 different cars, which has been what I bought it for.

Yours is £999 here: https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov....Search&super=&super_pricefrom=&super_priceto=

Check out the second definition of "grand" here..https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=grand

Also, here is a snippet I sent to a mate a few days ago.. can't remember the site. Turns out I should have bought it if it's already at £1k.

https://www.platehunter.com/hunt seems to be the site I used and still quoting £820.

Some of these sites dynamically adjust the price according to the number of times something is viewed (a bit like EasyJet do).

Yes that crossed my mind alright. I know Ryanair used use cookie for that.
