Hello-probably think i'm crazy-but i am putting a 250 diesel engine and auto gearbox from a 1990 124 series car- into my petrol mercedes 300sl 24 valve auto 1992. Before i start can anyone tell me if i am going to have a problem trying to connect the speedo and the ignition for the glo plugs to start and stop the car off of the ignition. I would be very grateful for any help in this matter before the engine and gearbox is taken out.

cheers

Hi i am no expert on the complete change but im sure someone will be along soon with more info. but my guess is you will need the complete wiring loom from the diesel if not the complete car alongside so you have everything to hand you could possibly need. i do know of a mb club member who has a 300d from a w124 in his w107 sl has been done some time and he drives around europe in it regularly.

You won't really need the loom - the only extra wiring needed is for the glowplug system and the idle stabilisation. You will need the vacuum system, binnacle and a few more things you haven't thought of

I detailed pretty much everything you need some time ago in another thread on one of the forums

At a guess you'd need to swap Engine, gearbox, differential, wiring loom, instruments, fuel tank and lines. Probably more as well.

Do a search on here, it's been discussed before.

While you're doing it take loads of pictures so you can tell us all about it, I quite fancy putting a 300D engine in a 124 Coupe.

I believe the axle ratio will be different so you may need the diff as well if you would like it to perform correctly.
The speedo will not read the correct speed or mileage if the drive ratios are different and the tacho wont work and the lights are wrongly marked, so you will also need the instrument panel with the correct warning legends on it.
It can be done, there is an F reg 300D besides the A49 near charnock richard services that was a 230E, it seems to have been a fairly easy conversion job.
