Hi, I have a 98 C180 Sport Estate, I have a smell of petrol when I fill up.
There is no leak as I constantly check, the smell will be there if I put half a tank or a full tank.
When the fuel goes down to a quarter the smell will go (well almost).
Any ideas?
Cheers
Brad

I had a minor leak once and was advised by someone to do this.

Give it a go as the only reason for a petrol smell is if its getting out of tank somehow and from what you saying, it seems the problem goes away when the petrol level goes lower so it could the pipe which connects to filler cap.

You could look around the filer pipe for any damp patches, they will look black looking area's, if it is not there all the time, then cannot be fuel pipes

if it's at the top of the fuel filler pipe you would have a strong smell inside the car esp the estate model

These cars do have a charcoal filter..under the wing?? This is designed to absorb the fuel gasses and smells, the filter may need changing or a pipe may have become perished or frayed...
