Dexron2 is OK, Dexron3 is better for the transmission.
Steering uses MB fluid from dealers or euro car parts/German+swedish. definately not dexron.
Suspension again uses a specific oil available from dealers, not dexron.

Any further on the 5 Speed Auto Fluid?

Anybody got any more idea on what fluid to put into my C200 transmission - 5 speed, late 1996 ( One of the early electronic boxes I think.) Also tips on how to do the job appreciated !!!

Stewart.

Auto transmissions need the correct fluid as it is usually parafin based with additives, such as seal swellers and lubricants.
I believe the fluid is Dexron IIE, but would strongly advise you use MB fluid. Yes it's expensive and it takes 7.5 litres, but you only do the job once.

To change the fluid run the car until the box is warm, lift the car off the ground, remove the undertray, rotate the flywheel until the torque converter drain plug points down. Remove the plug, about five to six litres will drain. Next remove the transmission drain plug to release the rest. Remove the trans. sump pan. There will be some residual fluid left in the pan so have a large drip tray handy.

Pull off the filter and replace with a new one. Fit a new pan gasket and refit the pan. Refit both drain plugs complete with sealing washers.
Refil the transmission through the dipstick tube. You need a small funnel for this. Add about 6.5 litres or so.

Drop the car onto the ground and take for a drive until warm.
Measure the level on the trans. dipstick, which you need to buy, after running the selector through every gear with the engine running, then back to P.
The dipstick should be pushed into the tube until it hits the bottom of the sump.
Keep filling until the correct level is reached.

The only tools you need are Torx drivers for the sump bolts and allen driver for the drain plugs.
