Hi All,

My e250 coupe was fine tmthis morning then half way to work the dreaded yellow engine management light came on. On the way home I noticed the car won't go past 3000rpm and feels like the turbo isn' working so I'm guessing the car has shut the turbo off and gone into limp mode? Do you have any ideas what it could be? The code was P2279 which I believe is a air intake leak. I lifted the bonnet and can hear a hissssing sound which I positive wasn' there before it seems to be coming from the right side of the engine. When im driving and press the accelerator Iim sure I can hear air escaping?? Please Help.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum Dean.

When its light, have a good check of the boost hoses as it sounds like one has split or is certainly leaking.
If you have a decent MB independant garage nearby you'll soon be running again. Much cheaper than main dealer if you can avoid them.

Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunatey I know as much about cars as I do about rocket science. Where exactly would I find the boost hose? I do have a independent garage close. They are wanting to put smoke through it. Is this necessary?

When you say right side, is that your right as you are stood at the front of the bay, looking in at the engine? Intake manifold is on the right. There are boost hoses, but these are also common for a broken inlet manifold bolt, 99.999 times out of 100, the second one in from the front on the bottom. Smoke test will definitely find it. I must have done fifty of them!

Are they bad and expensive to do? I don' want to be spending a ton of cash on her. I recently got the water pump replaced. It' the right side if I stand in front of the car.
Many thanks

As above. Boost hoses are a common failure. Also sheared bolts. To find it yourself a length of hose is often all that's required. Put one end near your ear and move the other end around where the sound is coming from and when it's loudest you've found the source of the leak.

Don't let your local garage pull your pants down. It isn't hard to find a boost leak.

Where are you located? It would be handy to take it to an MB specialist who knows what they are doing.

Yes, when “independent garage” is mentioned, we definitely don’t mean any old backstreet spannerman (though some may be superb).

Really we mean an independent mercedes specialist, they know the cars, their foibles, and the fixes! They often have STAR which is a very specialised MB diagnostic system, far in advance of generic diagnostic systems, which will not interrogate your cars systems as thoroughly.

Post up where you live and you may get some recommendations.

****UPDATE****
Hi Guys,
just thought id give you an update and hopefully you can offer advice.
i took the car into the garage today and explained the issue i had and given them the code i had found. They said it sounds like a broken hose or sheered bolt from the inter-cooler.
then then rang me while at work and said they have ran smoke through it and found no leak but while doing the diagnostics it pointed to 4 separate codes all relating to the air manifold, they said that out of the 4 cylinders number 1 swirl flap wasn't working and was jammed but the other 3 are ok, they said i might require a new air manifold and a cost of £400 - £500 plus about 6 hours labour. BUT they said they wont know really until they take it apart and inspect it. he said that he managed to get to the cylinders and tried to free it but couldn't.
i asked if it was ok to go back and forward to work in limp mode they said it should be fine and they could do the work next week.
On the way home i noticed the car was again showing the signal when to change gear (like it did before it went into limp mode) so i thought id take it for a spin, the car now revs as normal and feels as good as the day i picked it up. Now im not naive and think his magically fixed it??
what do you guys think, could the number 1 flap now be released and could this issue be caused by me doing short journeys and not giving it a arse kicking?

thanks for reading.

Have you had the fault codes read on the car by a garage equipped with a Mercedes STAR computer ?
