The new E-class (2013) seems to have dropped the traditional erect (all right, stop sniggering, you boys at the back) 'gunsight' bonnet star, and gone for the flush version instead. Other models in the range are divided between the two (and I've never worked out if there was a logic or trend behind this). So which do you prefer, not just for the E-class but generally?

Personally, the mounted 'gunsight'.

As for the new E-Class, oh dear. A monstrosity as far as im concerned

Usually the coupe models have the grille badge. Or for example when the model is split eg c class then the sport models have grille and the elegance models gun sight. I think on the sporty models with aggressive front ends the grille badge suits. Can you imagine an sl65 with a gun sight!??

Should have had a depends on the car option. Some should have the gunsight, some should have the flat badge.

I thought the idea was for the saloons and estates to have gunsights, and for coupes and roadsters to have the flush badge. I do wish they would stick to tradition.

True. Would be happy to add that as an option, alas can't seem to edit the poll (nor any of my postings for that matter).

Reminds me of a joke... This goes back to the days of West and East Germany so I'll tell it like that, feel free to replace the passenger with your preferred nationality etc.

An East German goes on his first visit to West Berlin, and climbs into a taxi (which of course is a Merc). After a while he asks the driver what the thing sticking out of the bonnet is. The driver sees that the passenger is a bit of an ogie from the skogie, so replies "It's the aim, I use it to run over pedestrians". "Oh, I see..." Then so as to demonstrate his point the driver pretends to aim at an old lady crossing the street, and at the last minute swerves to 'miss' her. "Too bad... a near miss, eh?" "Not to worry, I got her with the rear door" came the reply. :p:p

On newer cars, flush every time! Much neater, less air resistance, nothing for chavs to break off, and as a gunsight, pretty useless. They look cool on a Grosser though!

They would look great stamped in the forehead of a chave too. And as a gun sight pretty good if it was backed up with a pair of MG42's. But that will never happen will it.

Thanks for all your votes and replies, folks. Looks like the gunsight is winning by a bit of a landslide (albeit with the proviso that on the sportier models a badge will probably work better), which begs the question why did MB go for the badge in the new E-class? Surely they must conduct enough focus groups etc. to know that the majority of customers (if this small survey is anything to go by, at least) feel this way?
