I want to replace my poly v belt on my E220 coupe (non air con, non self leveling). The existing belt code is A 119 997 1892 with supplementary code of 6k2055 ek407. Merc did not have a direct replacement but gave a substitute no with a supplementary code of
6k2040 ek407. I was told that the number 2055 refered to the belt length in milllimetres. This suggested the new replacement belt at 2040 was 15 mm shorter! Could this be compensated for by the tensioner adjustment?? Further searching on the parts computer based on the A 119 997 1892 number with no model or year filters on yielded an alternative part no of A 012 997 1592 and supplementary code of 6PK 2055. While this other belt gives the correct length of 2055 I have no idea if this is a suitable belt or not . Can anyone cast some light on the mysteries of poly v belt part numbers or the adjustment limits of the tensioner on the e220 engine. thanks

You are right in that 2055 is the length of the belt in millimeters, the 6PK or sometimes 6FPK means it is a micro or multi ribbed belt with 6 micro ribs. The smaller 2044 belt could be for a different model without A/C or with a different alternator pulley.

Generally speaking you should obviously always fit the correct length belt, however you can usually get away with a few mm either way, maximum of perhaps 15mm.

If the dealer does not have the correct belt just go to any good motor factors and ask for a 6PK2055 of 6FPK2055.
