Thanks Alex.

I have owned RR's in the past and would certainly consider them as a contender - BUT they don't come with an extra row of seats, do they?

As I pointed out in post #8 LR D3s do have a third row of seats.

Third row seats OK for adults for shortish journeys and fine for kids.

The third row seats are big enough but space is a bit cramped.

RRS and 'Full Fat' Range Rovers do not have seven seats.

LR D3 does.

I know this won't be what you want but if you read the review it gives you some good comparisons.

May well be a contender. Difficult to tell from this, in my opinion, very poor road test. More of description of the vehicle than an opinion. What opinion there was insipid; e.g.’ It’s light and easy to drive, very easy to get on with, and doesn’t irritate in any way.’ Faint praise indeed.

‘ This one, on its 245/60 R18 tyres was totally unruffled on the roads. I’m a bit circumspect hustling something as tall as this round bends but discovered I had nothing to worry about at all. It just went round.’

Doesn’t really talk about ride comfort, noise, performance, real world fuel economy , running costs, safety features, quality or intangibles like enjoyment.

One of the middle paragraphs compares some of the rear seats.
He never mentioned the XC90 which I think might be a contender.

If it's 4x4 there can be only one...could be a film there.

Landcruiser Amazon, either 4.2 Diesel or (lpg'd) 4.5V8 petrol.

Don't worry about finding an indy it will only need servicing.

It may not be an obvious choice but what about a Jeep Commander?

It has 7 useable seats, is roomy and suprisingly comfortable on long motorway runs. Equipment is pretty good as standard if you go for the Limited (Leather, climate, electric seats, park sensors, etc, etc).

It isn't great around town but you say that isn't a priority for you.

If you go for the diesel you get the 3 litre Mercedes unit in it.

Best of all you could get one which is a couple of years old for under £15k (in the UK).

they did not do well in crash test ??
