In reality, the joints will be worn out a long time before the rust gives any problems, due to being heavy gauge steel.

Just to conclude my side of things. After 2 coats of POR15 and 2 coats of chassis paint the wishbones are finished and look like:

I've taken a real pasting on another forum for the finish and quality, but I'm thick skinned, like the wishbones ;)

My key lessons learnt are; mask off areas you don't want painted, use a thin brush.

To be honest the surface finish doesn't bother me. The day I start worrying about how wishbones look, is the day I clearly have too much spare time.

For a £15 outlay I hope I've extended the life of those parts by a few years, so in my eyes it was money and time well spent.

as its YOUR car, as long as YOU are happy with the work you have done, whats it matter what others think? especially if youre not considering selling it to THEM!!!

Just enough spare time to get under there with a toothbrush...

hi rapey69, the boat i have was built by "striker" in rotterdam, marine grade aluminium, to BS 1500 N8. above the water line you are correct in saying no protection is required, however below the water line in salt water you require protection as ali is high up on the electro chemical series and is very anodic to steel or copper drive gear, hence the fitting of zinc sacroficial anodes. even if your hull does not have any dissimilar metals on it you can still have problems with materials in the harbour etc. if you take your boat out after use then obviously my comments do not apply.

my boat is 11 tons and 40 ft in length so it has been in the water for 30yrs, just lifted out once every 2 yrs for 48 hr antifouling and fitting new anodes.
i am currently lying in rothesay on the island of bute, prior to this i was in stranraer on loch ryan, some of the local kids started cutting boats loose and a trawler went aground, i chained my boat to the harbour to stop them cutting the mooring ropes, after 6 months it was due for lift out, as luck would have it, i then discovered for the first time the 4 huge anodes were completely corroded away, i immediately realised why, i had set up a perfect galvanic cell by earthing the hull to the harbour wall. herbiemercman.http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=12761&stc=1&d=1284570406

Thats a nice looking boat..
Lift for antifoul every TWO years??? I wish.. Obviously a high fouling area in the solent :(
Heres a pic of my aluminium "tender", all 20 ft of it with a 90 on the back..Was originally built as a ferry !
I use it for whizzing across the harbour to my sailing boat as pictured in avatar as its about 1.5 miles away which is too far for rowing boat in winter when rough.

hi rappey, you also have a nice boat, mine blows 5 galls/hr yours rides on the wind. my boat "moru" which is mauri for shark, is a tuna fishing boat with tuna tower and lee outriggers etc. i used to love sea fishing and some of the fish have been fantastic fishing wrecks and reefs in the inner hebrides etc. it has all gone in the past 5 yrs due to commercial overfishing inside the 6 mile limit. the scottish sea lochs used to be one of the best breeding grounds for winter cod etc, it's all gone, just prawners now. is there any fish left in your area ? herbiemercman.http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=12772&stc=1&d=1284656171

there are fish around but people need to go about 10 miles out to catch anything worth eating, other than bass of which there are loads.
the sailing bit is a lot cheaper, average speed around 5-6 knts but zero fuel consumption and a nice smooth ride ;)
got a few steel bits on the boat which i would like to coat with por15 but what with the various coats its so much messing around.
Would be a good test in a salt water environment though.
