Hello everyone, The other day i heard a chuffing sound coming from the engine bay turns out cylinder number 8 has been helli-coiled and had failed and will no longer do up, so i will be getting the spark plug tread re done! i need to replace the valve seals anyway as it smokes now and then. so im taking my heads to a local engineers is it worth getting the heads ported and polished its quite a expense but from what i have read up about other v8's being p&p there have been sizable power gains i was thinking it would be rude not too while the heads are off? has anyone had there mercedes m116/m117 engines p&p or know anyone who has?

Many thanks

I don't know how this engine is regarded* but personally i wouldn't bother with a 'proper' port and polish** due to the time (and thus money) involved in doing it properly unless you're planning on tuning it. A quick clean up on the other hand is worthwhile but i'd all depends on how well finished they are as stock- probably pretty good i would have thought

* some engines are known for small/restrictive ports relative to the valve size while others have the reverse and the ports are already on the large side for the valves

** polish is a bit of misnomer in that actually polishing the ports doesn't work as well as smoothing/blending them and finishing with nothing finer than 60 or 80 grit. The bit that takes the time in doing a proper job is matchporting without wrecking the geometry/enlarging port volume too much
