Possible alternator/earth issue on a 2007 W209 M272 E30

Hi all,

I recently replaced the alternator with a refurbished unit and now I have an issue with the engine not ticking over smoothly when I have my lights on and certain lights are flickering - interior and rear lamp clusters.

Is this a faulty alternator or maybe just a badly connected earth?
