I have a 2003 C270 CDI and it seems to pick up little scratches ( and some big ones) on the bonnet very easily. Does anybody know of any issues with 'soft' paint finishes on this year of car?

it will be going to MB for a service in the next month or so and I will raise it with them at that time. It would be nice to be armed with any evidence that may be available, though.

Without getting too technical and actually attempting to pin point the actual cause, you could point out that u are a member of an MB forum and it would appear from numerous posts that MB have a problem with their paintwork, and in most case they are repairing or replacing panels under warranty..that should make a good case for you

I have the new paint on my 2005 CLK and it gets stone chips too.
Rather than soft paint being the reason, I think it is due to the streamlined shape at the front which means more exposed bodywork low down in the line of fire as it were. I even found a couple of stone chips on the front of the roof, as well as a chipped windscreen.
My theory is the less aerodynamic and more square shaped the front of a car is, results in stone chips hitting the radiator grill and not harming the paintwork as is the case with a sports coupe like the CLK.
Also, the state of roads and lack of real maintenance over the last decade has resulted in an abundance of stones and gravel on our roads.

The problem isn't with stone chips (they are just a fact of life) it is more to do with scratches, goodness knows where they are coming from but it is almost as if a new one appears on a daily basis. Just very fine scratches. As I mentioned, I will ask the quetion at service time.

Do you use car washes?

I had 2003 C220 in black/green and in sunlight the swirly scratches stood out really bad,it must have been thro' carwash a good few times before i bought it,stay away!also if you(or someone else) drive too close to one in front this is the result of the ones on bonnet;)

No to the car wash question. These scratches are as if somebody has just brushed against it but in positions that you wouldn't expect. As I say, not a major issue I just wondered if MB had possible paint problems on 2003 cars. Maybe it is just bad luck on my part, or a neighbour with a BMW who is jealous :)

Cats are notorious for sitting on warm bonnets, and I've seen quite a bit of scratch damage from cats jumping up on the bonnets and then finding that the front area is too sloped for a secure hold and out come the claws, select all wheel drive and a few skids and there u go... landed .. it happens on the top of the wings as well.........
