Hi Guys,

New to the forum, and (hopefully) new to MB ownership.

Basically, theres a CL55 (2001) I am looking to buy in the next few days. I have given the seller a deposit, but I didnt see the logbook at the time as it was sent away to have the private registration that was on the car taken off.

So when he gets the logbook back and gives me a call to check all the paperwork and collect, I will want to check the the engine number shown on the log book (hopefully its a 113986 engine (amg) and not a 113980 (cl500)!)

BUT...WHERE IS THE ENGINE NUMBER STAMPED ON THE ACTUAL ENGINE??? and can you see it without jacking the car up???

IF ANYONE HAS A PICTURE SHOWING WHERE IT WOULD BE MOST USEFUL AS IT WILL MAKE MORE SENSE TO ME THAN A DESCRIPTION! i have tried google images with little luck...

Would really appreciate the help chaps! (and ladies)

Tony .

Also, I know there is a Vin number shown in the windscreen of these cars, and theres one on a sticker when you open the drivers door, but where is it stamped on the body?? I've heard under drivers seat but after a quick look (very quick!) could not see it??

Perhaps someone with a CL can clarify???

When you say the above, do you mean it will be in different places on all CL55 engines??

Or do you mean 'different engines' for example...the engine from a C180 will have it in a different place to a CL55 engine?

and to which paper do you refer? :)

Thanks

I cannot find it as of yet :( I though that I printed it off.

Engine numbers are in different places on different engines, but the same place on the same engine.

I am still looking

The VIN can be found at the bottom of the windscreen, passenger side and also behind the rear seat base, fuse box cover (move the drivers seat forward to access this).

I think that the engine number is at the back of the engine and that you'll need to remove the engine cover to access it. I'll have a look later if I have the time.

I can understand you being a bit wary, in case the owner has replaced the clocks with AMG ones and put an AMG engine cover on plus badges elsewhere, but I'm not sure what visible difference there are between the standard engine in the CL500 and the naturally aspirated 5.5 litre AMG engine for this age of CL.

Appreciate that! (above)
Although could you clarify the third location of the VIN?? Sounds tricky to get too!?? (a picture if by any chance you have one would be brilliant!)

The reason in particular I ask about engine number locations is because the car has a 215375 VIN ... I know the CL55 is usually 215373 BUT if I can refer you to the thread below (without starting a huge drama all over again! like it did at the time lol) it states that checking the engine number is a 113986 on both the logbook and engine is key to determining if it is a genuine CL55 and not a CL500 with AMG kit. (HPI check and conversation with DVLA has confirmed it as CL55 on logbook) although the full vin decode showed a CL500 (again just as per below thread)

Link to previous forum thread below which first must have given the owner a heart attack, before slowly helping him to realise he has a genuine CL55..

This must be some conversion with that 215 number, it cannot be wrong on both counts, the CL500 and the 215 the gearbox is not the same as well.

CL55 uses the 722.636, the CL500 uses three other numbers

The number has to be on the block as the head is replaceable, if it is at the rear then its on the block just where the head meets the bolck

Hi,
The engine number on a N/A 55 113 V8 IIRC is on the drivers side rear just below the head, about as close to the gearbox it can be. I did have a pic of mine but for the life of me I can,t find it, make sure you take a bright torch with you as they are "very" hard to see.
To be honest if it is a 215375 chassis number it will not be a 55 AMG.

Thanks Pal,

Will take a good look. Can you see it from the engine bay or do you need to be under the car??

With regard to your 215375 comment, may I refer you to the previously posted thread link. There is a possibility it is a genuine 55AMG even with the 375 chassis number.

I contacted MB Head Office today, I am expecting a call back tomorrow as they will look into it more closely.

I will of course update on here once I have spoken with them...

So basically opinions are that the engine number is located as above...

and the Third Vin is under the drivers seat/rear seat bench??? Any advance/further thoughts on this gents??

and the Third VIN is under the drivers seat/rear seat bench?

Lean the drivers seat forward - it should then move forward to give you easier access to the back seat.

You'll need to remove the fuse panel. Be careful, it has some of those horrible clips that tend to brake.

Here's a picture:

The VIN is along the top edge, you can't see it the photo as from this angle it is hidden by the carpet edge.

Mate,

You're an absolute star!! Thanks for that..(I just hope its the same for the 2001 model!)...you never know with some manufacturers, they may change them after an update/facelift (I notice yours is 2004 :)

Also, still waiting for an update (call back) and a PROPER explanation from MB regarding the 215373 / 215375 use with early 55AMG's.
They say they have passed the case to what they call their 'Technical Specialists'...

I will of course update on here in due course so that others can sponge some knowledge!

Tony
