Power steering

Hi All, Does anyone have any idea why my steering has become suddenly very heavy. I have a C class 2003. I've checked the tyre pressures. I can hear the PAS pump working normally but the steering is heavy. There are no apparent leaks. The car has only covered 28k. Any ideas?

Your vacuum has gone, check the serpentine belt is still intact or a leak in the PAS. Quicker to get it diagnosed if you can't find the obvious.

That what happened to me, when the water pump broke, it loosen the serpentine belt that works the vacuum pump, can't image how heavy handed without the PAS.:rolleyes:

Vacuum pump on the steering :eek::eek::eek: That must be worse than a rubber prop shatt

All I can think of is a ball joint that seized up,easy to check by jacking the front

The belt drives the power steering pump, no belt then no power steering!!

The brake servo gets its vacuum from the engine. either manifold pressure or seperate pump, nothing to do with auxillary drive belt.

Dragon, Can you please stick to posting news flashes and leave off the technical stuff as you clearly dont have a clue mate!!!

Re the power steering, there is nothing vacuum about it in any way

Does the steering pump not work on the principle of a vacuum similar to brake assist?

You guys were right not by vacuum but hydraulic, my hindsight.

No it generates fluid pressure and pushes the internals steering gear, to give the power assisted steering.

Very sorry for the mess up on your thread.

First thing to do is to check the a ball joint has not gone too tight or a bottom swivel. Jack the front and you should see anything that is too tight

You really need to get the whole front off the ground, you should then be able to get hold of a wheel and swing it from lock to lock
