It may not sound that urgent but coming home in the rain lastnight my front wipers failed.
Luckily I was not to far from home but I need to use the car today for a longish trip and don't fancy banking on it staying dry.

Can anybody point me in the direction of an online diagram so I can see how it all goes together (I can still hear the motor running) I can move the blade across the screen with little resistance so I think it's a linkage problem.

w210, The ball joint on the wiper mech has worn out and come apart, common fault. New mech is about £30 from MB, Part number A 210 820 00 41 pane wiper linkage.

The diagram from senior member jibcl 500 is a very good start. watch out when you take the plastic clips apart. pay attention to how it comes apart as the timing is critical. There are raised dots on the main alloy assembly which indicate where you should relocate gear drive. give it a try and come backif necessary. Use some quality water proof grease on the moving parts

From what I can see on that diagram I think it's part 8 that has gone, can't see how I get to it.
I have the large plastic cover off.

Well thanks to all the above, found the fault. It does look like the ball joint has come apart. I assume it can't be repaired but needs a replacement

pic here (I hope)

The most common fault is where the nut on top of the motor comes lose, and you lose drive
