About a year ago I posted a thread asking if anyone could give me advice on a problem with my E320 (2003 model). A squealing noise was coming from the engine when it had been stationary (with the engine off) for a while. The noise was intermittent but could go on for half an hour. I couldn't exactly locate the noise and I took it to the dealer on a few occasions but the noise didn't appear and they couldn't find anything wrong. However, a couple of days ago it started squealing away so I got out my stethoscope (yes I'm a doc) and listened to the various parts of the engine. I put my steth on a pipe (right front lower) and every time the noise came I could hear a gurgling sound in the pipe. I think it must be the air conditioning pipe. Does anyone know what might be going on? The air con has been working fine. I have booked it in to the dealer again - I'll let you know what happens.

Are you sure that the noise you hear intermittently is not the air con belt slipping slightly.. does it need replacement or tightening?

Just to add, on my previous cars (VAG Audis), the aircon often makes noises after the engine has been shut off. I presume its just liquids moving around while the temperature of the various components becomes balanced.

problem solved

There are no belts running at the time. The noise is definitely coming from a pipe. The noise is definitely abnormal- you would be embarrassed to say it was your mercedes if someone could hear it!! I assume there is some sort of build up of pressure in the pipe.
