Hello i am not sure if i am in the correct forum but i hope someone can help. My fan was not working and the car overheated if running at a stand still. I tested bridged the connection on the thermo switch with the ignition on and the clutch engaged. however whilst doing this i noticed 2 pipes that have snapped from the same area. The pipes look like straws with rubber hooks on the end. Please can some one explain what they do and what i need to buy to fix the problem. Also will there be any dammage caused if i continue to use the car untill i can fix it thanx. Please see the pics. P.S I taped the pipes up so they wouldnt drop under the engine.

The pipes should be plugged onto the thermo actuator, which looks to have broken stubs, also in your picture. This is the feed to the cold start device.

New thermo switch and re-connect pipes @ £10-then check it all again --if you do have to use it with fan not working make sure it does not overheat--carri a container of water just in case?

I think the thermo vacuum switch is actually on the manifold line to the evaporative emission control charcoal filter under the wing- but could be wrong???- anyway replace the unit+ reconnect pipes as has been said and everything should be fine. Keep the nylon pipes[straws] blocked until then- just stick something of the correct diameter metal rod or a bolt even, up the the little rubber hookends.

I have blocked up the pipes bet I have now noticed the temp gage on the dash is no longer working are these pipes the cause of this. I have ordered the 2 switches needed should get them tomorrow. Are they easy to replace.

NO the pipes have nothing to do with the temperature gauge. However the sensor for engine temperature display is located in the same area IRRC

there are several sensors at the front of the cylinder head the temperature gauge one is the single pin sensor on the side of the cylinder head. If you short its lead to earth briefly the gauge should read full scale.

temp gauge sensor on this engine is the single plug on the fan switch - bottom LHS in the picture.

I am finding it difficult to find the temp sensor that the pipes are supposed to be connected to. I have been to my local mercades garage and even they cannot find it. The systems keep showing a different temp sensor for this engine where have other people been able to purchase this part from. Thank you for all your replies you have all been very helpful

The unit that the 2 pipes attach to is not a temperature sensor. Its a VACUUM switch that is temperature operated. Its called a THERMOVALVE and as far as I know there are 2/3 part nos opening/closing at 50c or 70c depending on its use. As AP says the old switch part no or your chassis no should tell you which "temperature switch point" unit you need.

I have tested the connection by joining the plug with the negative on the battery and the temp guage went up to max soes this mean that is fine. I purchased a new switch but this does not appear to work. The old switch is black and the new one is white does the colour matter with this one. Its the fan switch. Thank you all
