Hello all,

I let a Mercedes Benz dealer in Germany install a tow bar on my W211 E320CDI of 2006. Everything went perfect till the moment I decide to modify the circuit of the car in a way I could have 12 volt current from the car to the caravan. This work has been done by the same Mercedes dealer. Now when starting the car for the first time in the morning (cold engine) the preglow indicator lamp (yellow coil indicator) goes on for few seconds and off again (as it should be). The engine starts without problem. When the engine start running this preglow indicator lamp comes back and stays about 90 second; then it gets off again for the rest of the day. When starting the car with warm engine during the day this lamp does not appear anymore till the next morning.

Anyone has a similar problem or an idea about it? Do I have to go back to the dealer for it:?:

Thanks & best regards

Robert

You have a glow plug out, a short test will show which one is at fault!!

Hello Sam,

Thanks for your quick reaction. Do you mean it is a damage glow plug or maybe they did not connect it back during the work?

regards,

Robert

The tow bar has a conection to the rear SAM, they wouldnt have gone now-where near the engine side of things, glow plugs are common on the CDIs!!

Hello there,

It sounds logic. Is the timing just coincidence? Before I never have had such problem! BTW is it expensive to repair it here in The Netherlands? Or get it back to Germany (about 200 miles) where the car is still having a German warrantee!
Regards,
Robert

The glow plug light on after starting indicates a faulty plug. I think I got about 65k miles [100k km] before they started to fail. Probably better to replace them all. they stick and can break so get the dealer to do it. I now have 160k and the replacements are still ok.

As Sam said have your glow plugs tested, just coincidence you had wireing for the tow-bar and the glow plug light has come on, they are like bulbs in your car they can last for years or 1000s of miles or just have a fatel heart attack, as to driving it with one or two down not urgent but do have it replaced when you can as it can knock the glow plug relay out eventually and thats about £80.00.Hope this helps

On my W211 E270 of the 2002 years, morning when starting the engine (cold start) engine heater not working, they are all correct. And the outdoor temperature is -10.
Help me please.

How do you no there not working, CDIs as a rule don't need the plugs to start, although they might help in your country............

Heater plugs would certainly help at -10..is it possible the control box or fusible links have gone down..
