Problems with Auto gear change when cold

I have just aquired a 1998 C200 petrol - when starting and moving off from cold the auto box will not change up from gear 3 until driving approximately 1mile.

Has anyone else had this problem - any advice would be appreciated

What is the best place to purchase an autobox dip stick and tamper proof seal?

This is normal for that year of car, and the weather gets colder,,it hangs onto the gears to warm up the CAT as quickly as possible

This is intentional I believe. It helps the engine warm up faster, whereupon gear changes should be smooth and normal.

Is your car fine when warm?

Thanks to Malcolm and Alex this is very reassuring any ideas on getting an auto dipstick

You can make one from curtain wire and the correct level is 5.6 cm up the wire when hot at 80c the sealing caps come from MB

The sticks cost £35 when you an find somewhere that sell them

Hi tiger, no problem with your C200 doing that, mines has been just like that for the last 100,000 plus miles with no problems.
