Hi,

I wanted to add my experiences with retrofitting an APS30 to my W210, but the threads in which I found all the info are locked. I found the advice on this forum absolutely invaluable when it came to do the job, so here's what I found out about programming the cluster to display the Nav information:

I spoke with the guys at Whitefield Mercedes, Manchester, today (0161 796 1006) as my local dealership were not too sure if my W210 could be re-programmed to "see" my retrofitted APS30. I got the Whitefield steer from a link to another forum. They were very helpful and happy to give advice - excellent!

In an nutshell, yes the cluster can be re-programmed to show the Nav information because the 4716 APS30 has a B2B bus. Hook up the malfunction diagnostic computer and tell the car to look for the "Navigation" page rather than "APS30" (which it will not see - ain't there, apparently). I was advised that the whole process is very simple and should be charged at no more than 0.3 hrs (if at all!!!!).

I'm going to give this a whirl in the next couple of months when my E320 CDI W210 is in for a service and will edit this info if I find anything elso out.

Cheers

Jon

Hi, I did the same in about 2000 on my CLK W208.
The main dealer is Slough (GreenOaks) did it for free while the car was being serviced.

Hi, I don't mean to hijack the thread, I've searched the forums but can't find the answer to my specific question.

I now have a 2002 ML320 (2003 MY), this currently has MB Audio 10 Tape headunit and a factory fit CD Changer (MC 3111). As you may be aware 1998-2005 ML's (W163) don't have a Multi Function display in the Instrument Cluster or Steering wheel controls.

I now wish to add MB Audio 30 APS as a navigation system (I previously had a Becker Traffic Pro in the A Class we had and am quite familiar with the type of unit) This forum and some other web site have shed some useful insight on this retrofit:

I found this model summar, which got me thinking:

BE4705: First version Becker/Mercedes OEM Audio-30 APS without CAN-Bus: DIN size; NavTech maps.

BE4708: Becker/Mercedes OEM Audio-30 APS : DIN size; NavTech maps. Special version for VITO etc installation at 30-60 degree tilt. (Normal units specified for 0-30 degrees).

BE4715: Becker/Mercedes OEM Audio-30 APS with CAN-Bus: DIN size; NavTech maps.

BE4716: latest Becker/Mercedes OEM Audio-30 APS with CAN-Bus: DIN size; NavTech maps.

My ML (or possibly all W163 ML's don't have CAN BUS but do have a speed signal on pin 1), when people retrofit COMAND using a rare non CAN BUS version there is nothing else to wire it's pretty much plug & play. CAN BUS enabled COMAND units need a CAN BUS simulator otherwise they have issues with the Day / Night mode on the COMAND unit and I recall reading somewhere about CAN BUS COMAND units in non CAN BUS cars switching off after about 40 minutes use.

Most of the units I've found offered for sale are BE4715 or BE4716's i.e. the newer CAN BUS units.

My question is, will a CAN BUS version of Audio 30 APS plugh & play in my ML or will I need:

i. A CANBUS interface / simulator
ii. wait & find an older BE4705 APS 30

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
You only use the Can-Bus to communicate with the car's cluster.
If you don't have that, the BE4715 or 4716 will work perfectly as long as you set the correct tyre size and don't forget the GPS aerial

Excellent, thanks for the prompt reply, I was hoping that would be the answer!

As for the GPS aerial, I intend to get the original MB combined GPS/GSM roof antenna (02-05 M-Class combo antenna) Part no: 163 820 1575 as it's already pre-wired to save the effort and maintain the OEM look. I think it's about £90+ though.

I think the APS30 needs a different type of connector than the standard / pre-wire which is intended for COMAND, although I could be wrong.

Cheers...

Went for the MB roof mounted GPS antenna. Lucily the pre-wired cable at the back of the head unit has the correct WICLIC connector on it already so it was plug & play.

COMAND retrofits would need a WICLIC to HRS (or is it HR5?) lead.
