I've been considering getting a Mercedes with the 250 cdi engine as want a bit of performance ( 204 bhp ) but I'm just wondering if I find a better value 220 cdi is it a viable option to buy it and then get it remapped to 204 + bhp as they are the same engine just turbos tuned different. I've seen before cars that got tuned and had problems but I think mapping has improved since ??? Anyone have any experience on the issue.

Thanks

I'm not certain if the turbo is different on the 250? Possibly a twin scroll, as opposed to single?

Either way, driven a couple of 220s and they're not a bad lump (bit tractor like at start and idle), so a decent remap should lift it noticeably.

I'm not sure you will get a much cheaper 220 unless you buy an SE, elegance or executive SE rather than a sport, and considering costs of remapping and possible insurance increases and warranty issues.
But just an opinion as I have no experience of remapping.

Cheers lads,

It's not the purchasing cost I'm worried about its just if I see a 220 with lower mileage and better spec compared to 250 and in a distance close to me that suits I was wondering would mapping be a viable option. I would be buying a 2011/12 so warranty would be gone I presume, is it 3 or 5 year warranty ???

3 years, but if you buy from MB Approved Used, it'll get a 12 month warranty. (I see also 0% APR and 2 years servicing at the moment too, down here).

They'd have to prove that any fault was attributed to the remap.

I had an old CLS done, and it did make the mid range quite cheeky.

220 and 250 are essentially the same displacement but actually have a few differences, off the top of my head the 250 has a bigger turbo, bigger injectors, bigger intercooler and I suspect a different airbox as well so tunable wise there very different engines. All depends on how much of a difference there is in price/spec and mileage wise but a 220 with a map will still never be as powerful as a 250 with a map.
