Purge control valve?

When the engne light appeared, I took the car straight to a garage with a diagnostic unit to pull the error codes. It said 'purge control valve permanently open.' I think the part number for this unit is 0004 703 593. As I'm not anxious to give MB about £250 for a replacement for an old vehicle, I've looked in the used and aftermarket areas - with no luck at all! There seems to be no consistency about what it's called, or what it fits - all the ones I've found on the web say 'not suitable for your vehicle.'

Can any of our experts confirm exactly what I need - the part number to look for - and possibly, where to get it in the UK?​
