I am not certain whether my recently acquired 2003 SL500 (base audio system) should have rear speakers. I believe it should, but no sound comes from them and on the COMAND audio settings menu bass, treble and balance adjustments appear but fader (front-to-back balance) does not. I would be interested in forum reader feedback before going the dealership/specialist repair route. With thanks, TS

There is a similar post to yours (seems to be an older post resurrected) about 5 posts above in this section. Malcolm (exceptionally knowledgeable chap on all things MB) now sadly no longer with us, comments on the R230 speakers. The rear ones seem to be sadly lacking! I had my R230 only for a couple of months before it was rear ended, but I did find the overall sound system average at best (and as you, little to no sound from the back speakers) but only for "a car in its class" - i.e. if fitted to a more mass-market brand then actually it would be acceptable :D. I wouldn't say you have a fault, just that the system isn't that good along with user control (settings) being very limited.

Anyway, who cares :) wind those windows down or get the roof off and listen to your lovely SL V8 soundtrack, who needs speakers!

Dear Harry, many thanks for this reply, and I've now located the earlier thread. In one sense, a relief to know there is no fault. In another, a bit of a frustration for a car in its class, as you say - but I balk at the cost of upgrading!

Agreed about the soundtrack, as well! In-car audio in an SL is definitely for rainy days.

No worries. I have the HK in mine now, again that is an OK system, but still could have been even better at the time. The worst sin is no user EQ settings, so you are stuck with factory settings save for bass and treble. Its a quality, lively and clear sound without a doubt, but I like less lively and plenty of deep bass, which it doesn't have. I sort of forgive its shortcomings though as the car is excellent! Need more sun though to get the roof down :D!
