ive got a slight cyclical "whup,..whup,..whup' noise and a slight vibration which I think is coming from the rear.

I'm thinking maybe rear bearing or prop shaft bearing?

I will get it up on a jack and check them when I can (away with work tomorrow), but they look like plain bearings, not taper (from diagrams I've seen).

Has anyone experience of changing them?

Are they easy to get out?

Special tools?

And most crucially, do you have a recommended supplier, I've seen SKF and SWAT(?) bearings on the bay, but will any correctly sized plain good quality bearing do?

Are there any bits which should be replaced at same time?

.... will it require Herculean strength to shift bits, as I've currently got tennis elbows and tears in tendons, so if yes ....it's off to the garage :)

You won't be doing this at home unless you have a press. If you are good with the spanners, maybe take the hub and new bearing to a garage for the press part. Have a look at the ABS reluctor ring and various arm bushes while you have it apart.

Maybe stating the obvious but before going this route its worth checking your tyres/wear, as posted many times on the subject certain low profile tyres get extremely noisy when worn and mimic bearing noises very well...

These look the same as the bearings i fitted to mates Scuby. The bearings look big enough to be on a lorry!!

They are tapered races. A pair of opposing cones inside a single outer shell, which means their pre loaded unlike the fronts. The Scuby's fail regularly.

There a nightmare to do.

If you haven't got pullers then it's brute force and ignorance, and you to have to angle grind the inner race off the flange. Hard work.

Re fitting is reasonably easy if your handy with a blowtorch and familiar with sweating bearings, if not, then as Uncle Benz states, find someone with a press.

I'd want to rule everything else out before going for the bearings, nightmare.

What you can do is jack the suspect wheel, and spin the wheel as fast as you can with a wheel brace with somebody sat in the car, they will hear it if it's noisy.

Noisy bearings don't usually show up as loose, it's damage on the bearing track that creates the drone.

Thanks Arudge, yep I was unsure if a bearing due to it not really ‘rumble’ like a bearing, and changing direction didn’t appear to change tone. Will check it out but think a trip to Terry at WG will be on the cards due to my elbows currently being a bit duff

The return of silence is bliss.

clk3202001,sl6002003 with everything regrettably sold ,A class 170cdi auto. NG/TF1800 ML250
similar issue on clk . i warm up inner race track and smack it on with a chisel whilst supporting it on a vice base that generaly expands it enough to get it to slide off. its still a bit of a pain ,tho they were there 16 yrs so cant complain too much
