Hello. I've been reading this forum for quite some time but this is my first post. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

I have a 1986 300E that is having the same "temp rises at idle in traffic" issues that I have seen posted here. It appears that the previous owner replaced the radiator (it says BEHR and has a date of 04-2004 on it) From the look of the fresh sealant around the thermostat housing, that must have been checked or replaced as well.

I am currently trying to determine if the fan clutch is failing. Using a carrot as recommended by previous posts, it will peel a certain amount from the tip, but putting about 2 pounds of pressure on the carrot stops the fan completely. Is this supposed to happen?

If this shows a faulty clutch, is there a special tool for removing the clutch?

If you have the Visco fan it is not a servicable Item, the electric version is controlled be on of the 2-3 sensors on top of engine front.

Thanks; yes, if viscous means it is a fluid clutch, then that is what I have. Do I need a special tool to remove it?

To do this the fan shroud must be removed (unclipped) there is a special tool to stop the pulley from turning,(angled bar to lock pulley from the rear) maybe you can make up something.
The fan and clutch is held on with screws on front Center screw torque at 45nm, other two at 10nm. the cast part number of the fan must be at front rad side.
The 11 blade fan was changed to 9 blades to improve cooling.
