Hello!

I have a CLS 450 4MATIC 2018 3.0 HYBRID

I have summer tires at the moment and want to change to winter ones

245/45R18 100Y XL on the front, and 275/40R18 103Y XL on the back

I have the rear rims from the back bigger than the front, can I buy a winter tire set of 4 with 245/45R18 and will they fit on the back as well?

Or do I need to buy a new set of rims as well for R18 and all be the same size, I am worried because the rims on the back are a bit bigger and maybe the R18 new winter tires not fit?

Can anyone help out? Thanks!

Hello and welcome

You can’t fit a square setup on staggered rims as the rears will be stretched. Look in your fuel filler flap and/or your manual and find out the narrowest set of wheels/tyres that will fit.

You can also look at sites like “mytyres” and they’ll have the option of picking your car and they’ll show what rims/tyres are available. I’d recommend a new set of wheels for winters. You could also go all seasons if they have them available in your current tyre size.

Russ, I thought you fitted square winters to your SLK280 then staggered summers - or is my memory failing again? OK on your 16's not OP's 18's! OP should also check available tyre sizes, especially all season, as I can't find all season 245/40 R17's for either of my cars! I would think, with a 4-Matic, all seasons might be a good choice!

I do have a square setup for my winters (205’s all around) summers are 205 front and 225 rear. Summer rims are wider on the back, winters are same all around.

In the long run I think that the best way forward is a spare set of rims with winter tyres fitted - cheaper to swap over without any damage to the rims with your summer tyres on.
A square set-up is the way to go - the handbook will show detail a recommended size, which is usually narrower but also with a higher profile than your summer set-up.

I purchased a set of rims with tyres from Alloy Wheels Direct. I've had good service from them, they even contacted me when I ordered a replacement rim - pot hole damage - to point out that it was a different finish to the set that I had ordered a year previously!.

You have

8Jx18 ET33 Front wheels
9Jx18 ET33 Rear Wheels

245 will fit on your rear wheels so you can go ahead with 245/45 R18 all round, no problems
