My r129 is booked in to have the exhaust replaced with a stainless steel item - this is due to the mid and rear section becoming scrap last year. The first thing that happened before the exhaust fell off is that one of the pipes from the back box fell off halfway up to Scotland, which burnt a hole in the bumper. The bumper isn’t trash but it would need replacing to be perfect.

So my intention is to have the bottom of the bumper tidied up and have tail pipes akin to the early AMG cars - twin square pipes.

Does anyone have any suggestion otherwise? I’m not having any silencers deleted. The fitter suggested the brand new amg tailpipe but the car is standard and I don’t intend on making it look like a shopping trolley.

That was pretty much one of the the thoughts I had for mine (with a cutout in the bumper for the pipes) but since then I've decided to put the pipes under the bumper to avoid cutting it.
I'm also tempted to redo the entire system with a custom one to give it a little more presence.
The system on mine is a bit odd.... 2 pipes into 1 (Lambda sensor is at this 'Y') into cat where it exits as 2 into centre box where it exits as 1 into rear box where it becomes 2 again.
I'm thinking to put in a 10" conjoined x-pipe section (with Lamda at this point) into 2 small cats into a new 2 in 2 out rear box and skip the centre box. Easy to return to standard too.

Mine is twin pipes with a crossover underneath, 2 pipes into 1 on the mid section after the cats, then just two pipes out the back of the back box. Hilariously the two rear sections on r129s are the same on all pre - facelifts. I know that because I spent a year trying to find second hand replacements.

I considered a removal of one silencer as it doesn’t sound much different without the back box. The fitter advised me against it. I’m inclined to take the advice as it’s about auto boxes and a drone.

£400 +vat for a cat back system is cheaper than the pattern replacement parts.
