Just came across a Japanese Magazine on MB cars that mentioned the use of R129 upper strut mounts for lowered W124s (Part # 124-320-0473 which is also for 4-matics). It looks to me that it has an elevated top mounting point (I don't know much Japanese). Does anyone know if the whole upper assembly (bump stop, dust cover, etc.) would move up as well to free up some usable suspension travel for lowered W124s? My new Vogtland coil spring (#952025) make the shocks hitting the bump-stops frequently (Need to shorten the bump-stops soon).

BTW the picture next to the R129 mount is the Differential Damper. Anyone know if it does make a difference from the standard differential case bushings?

Have you also installed shortened shock absorbers with your lowered springs ?

If not, you should do.

No I didn't want the ride to be too aggressive that normally came along with the shortened shocks. I do have the upgraded Bilsteins (V36-0361 & B36-1385), though.

Television, thanks for the parts list but it would not tell whether the underside (the side meeting the bumpstop) of R129/4-matic mount is the same shape as the normal one (124-320-1444) or it has a deeper recessed centre section so that the bumpstop goes up a bit for slightly more travel. Anyone has access to one of this for comparison?

HI , on this subject.

I had used the R129 top mount on the W124.
Generally its provides a cheap method of lowering for the front using standard spring. The drop is about 1".

Comfort is still maintain ; while shifting the front shock higher up the strut.
So far i have not had any ill-effect on this mod.

Attached some pic of the W124 top mount and the R129 mount for information.

Hope it helps.

Cheers.

How does the use of that 129 suspension part lower the suspension on a 124 car???????????

The spring is a seperate item to the damper strut and has no contact with the part you are refering to.

I agree that the existing (long) standard damper strut can be used with the 129 part and could avoid the need to buy shorter damper struts, but it has nothing to do with lowering the existing car.

Only shorter springs or thinner spring pads (compared to existing ones on car) can lower the car.

It is the rubber top pads that alter the height, the springs are the same I believe

Hi bro television, bro kth286,

Thanks for the feedback.

Honestly i am not too sure , but it with the fitment of the R129 top strut.
Its does lower the front of mine W124 (note, i am using new Bilsten shock <black colour ones>).
Rear is with new Bilsten shocks only. Standard spring.

Pls find below some pic for info.

Note : i had to resize some of the previous pic as it is taking up too much space.

Once again this forum has came up trumps ,I need to change the top mounts on my SL300 129 as the mounts are perished and it was picked up as an advisory on the last MOT. I thought I'd been given the wrong ones as the ones on the car are different.
It is now apparent that they have been changed before and the wrong ones from a 124 have been fitted, on checking the history of my car they were changed 10 years ago by an MB dealer, no wonder it felt a bit wallowy. I will fit new shocks too I think, although they look ok.

Do them before they give up Ive seen several R129's where the top mounts pushed up and put a nice dent in the bonnet.

First of all, welcome to the forum.Nice car you have there, side blinds to
Correct me if i`m wrong but those shocks you`re using, are not designed for lowering springs.Unless they`re the ones fitted to E36 AMGs,but they should have a sticker that says AMG
