My second car, a 1992 300 SL (80.000km and in excellent condition) has one ugly detail. The Gear shift knob's top part is pealing off, leaving the white plastic underneath to become visible. The lower part of the knob is made out of grey leather and this is still fine. Is this a one piece object and is it easy to remove/replace? Also tips for where I can buy it are welcome. Something tells me the MB Dealer will charge top prices and I can't find one on eBay...

not sure what the top was made of, but assuming it wasn't leather and if you can't find a replacemnt at reasonable price, try this stuff http://www.plastidip.co.uk/index2.cfm?page=products&prodId=1
amazing stuff for which you will find uses all over the place. Dries to a smooth rubbery finish (you can apply many coats)

Sorry Malcolm, forgot to state clearly that it's a stick shift and not an automatic transmission...

Thanks Malcolm!

Yep it is a stick shift, but I like it; brings out the feeling of real driving somehow and yet comfortable! ;)

You have any tips where I can get the knob? I don't want the one like in some W124 models where the knob and the leather 'sack' are separate. Has to be original for the 300SL like it says on the illustration...

You could ask a coach trimmer if they could re cover it,, you can beat leather with a mallet over a dolly to shape it, so that it takes up the shape of the knob. Buying one will be near impossible
