Just picked up my 1998 SL500 and can’t find any proper reference in the various manuals on how the headlamp wiper system works?
With lights on only etc or if the windscreen is cleaned 3 times of more at the same time etc?

Do they fail and if so what’s the most likely reason?

Pretty hard to see from the driver's seat unless it's dark (then you'll see a shadow move across the light pattern).

Park somewhere so that you can see the reflection of them. Yes last time I enquired about the blades they where £25 each. It is fairly easy to replace the rubber though, cut up a new blade and the steel insert bit and fit that.

Do not be tempted to crimp the plastic end, it snaps

The wipers work but not a drop of fluid in sight - where does the water come out of the arm?

There's a small hose feeds water in.
Does the pump run (different pump to main washers if I recall correctly).

The drivers side wiper controls the washer, with the wiper at rest, home position it will isolate the supply to the pump.
Yes two pumps on the washer bottle.
The tubes could be blocked, dis-connected.

Before you head off to Reading why not dis connect a pipe / hose from the pump on the washer bottle and have someone test it whilst you see if any water comes out, if the pump makes a sound.

Could just be a blocked pipe.

Not trying to do Star out of any work but some things are quite easy to look at.

Mine wouldn't shut off spraying water at one time and i had to disconnect the wiring plug. Turned out to be an N10 combo relay issue which got sorted when the main wiper started playing up...
