is this "SL Tax"?

[like RS tax on fords, anything that comes on an RS doubles in value on ebay even if its on other "lesser vehicles"]

Not sure what you mean (I know what the RS tax is). It's a model toy; I assume you know that but it's unclear! ;)

My 91 model has aircon, with blue/red indicator on the dash vents, cruise, adjustable steering wheel, no airbag, 5-speed box, and all the cubbies lock with the central locking. Two-phase heated seats are ace :)

Hope this helps

Jon

cheers John, is yours a manual? and what engine is it? accordign to what i remember the 280 and 300 came with manuals as standard where as the larger engines were Auto only...

hahah!

i need a V8 so that eliminates the option for me. and i'm sure there would be rare, i havent seen an R129 for sale

5 speed auto in a 1991? was it a retro fit?

i was saying that because it was related to a "Mercedes SL" that it was expensive, like anything with an RS badge generally is [unless its a Rs1800 fiesta then nobody knows what it is, but its still overpriced for a mk3 lol]

i knew it was a model :p

No, it's on the build sheet so must have been an option.

interesting.... i wasnt aware that the 5 speed existed in that year...? is it the same box as they put in the 500E? was that a 5 speed auto?

so,

been continuing to look at SLs, and i'm planning on going down to Bridgwater to have a look at one between christmas and new year.

i may go have a look at one in stafford, but it has ADS and i've pretty much decided that i want to avoid it.

Yes a wise move with ADS.

Re the gear box the 722.5 a box with an electric 5th gear was added or an option to some models only from mid 1992 till 06-96 when the 722.6 standard 5 speed box was introduced

Malcolm mine is a 1991 and it was on the build sheet. That's the only data point I can contribute ;)

OK it may have been earlier on the 129, and thank you for that, yours must have been one of the first with it :D

Just remembered it came along I think at the same time as the 24v engine

It's an electronic overdrive unit mounted at the rear of a four speed autobox, it comes in automatically if you leave the lever in "D" but can be over ridden if you move the lever to "4".
I have one fitted as standard to my 93 320CE and it works well, but I've just had to have the box overhauled and reverse gear B3 band and Piston replaced at 110,000 miles.

It wasn't cheap and something I did not bargain for when I bought the car, but £800 including removal and refitting isn't all that bad when you consider the company who did the work tell me to expect another 100,000 miles out of the gearbox as when inspected it was found to be in perfect working order apart from the reverse gear problem which had probably been caused by a previous owner slamming it into reverse before the car had stopped moving forward.
