This is a reasonable priced diagnostic for 38 pin cars:

Also works with later cars. It will require a laptop.
I use the v7.4 software on my 1993 129 and 2001 W210 (I also have Star, iCarsoft and Autel diagnostic kit and select the one that's easiest for the job). Star is usually my choice of last resort since it takes longest to set up

Lost Kiwi..
absolutely spot on info. I will look into these in the morning.
I have a Autel which I use on 2014 E250. Really excellent piece of kit . That’s what I was hoping to use an adapter to 38 pin socket.
thanks a lot.

I did say they can be a pain....
At least once it's done it's one thing you won't need to worry about....

Had problems with a cps myself. Sprayed it every time I went past it, plus gas and penetrating oil and after a week it just came out.
Need to be careful if attacking it with a drill, don’t drop anything in nor drill a bigger hole as either will lead to more problems..

Well gentlemen... got the car started about an hour ago . Iam celebrating.. but I have had the car not start before, and then ok after a few days. But, this time it seemed to only want to crank.. so a hard fault.
Car started within seconds after replacing crank sensor. It took 3 days, on and off to get that little b*****d out. Very slow progress to avoid damage.
Thank you all for the advice , and moral support.
Hope this post may help others.
