So I thought my Mercedes spark plug wrench in the toolkit wasn't working, but just found out it was meant for the plugs without the divits on the end. But of course my leads are for the divit kind, so I guess not original. I would like to use the original tool because it really holds the plugs good and gives a good feel of what's going on, but can you still get the type of leads that fit the screw on the plug? This is like my old beetle that was the same, you could really feel the screw connection.

Found that the number one plug had cracked insulation. Put a spare in and quite a bit of smoke came out back.

I'm a bit baffled. Some photos would help.

Surely the spark plugs themselves haven't changed to a different size? What's a divit?

What make/reference are the plugs and leads? Pictures?

Everyone wants to help.

Old VW spark plugs are larger than the ones fitted to M272 V6 motors etc
I notice your car ML270 CDI. no spark plugs or is for a different car?

Sorry, its my other car, a European r129, 1991, 300 SL (not 24), see my other posts. The plugs are normal NGK BP5 ES.
They have the nub (dunno what you call it) that screws on the insulated end of the spark plug as normal. But the (old) Mercedes tool kit that came with the car has the tool to put only the plugs in without this on it, so with a bare screw part. Once the plug is in using this tool, you cannot get this little nub bit on the plug because it is deep in the hole. But my plug leads are only usable with the nub bit on the spark plug. Of course I can use an ordinary plug wrench but it isn't as good as the original tool.
It's a bit hard to explain, ha ha, oh dear.

Yes I still have some old VW plugs of that type, but my VW beetle was a late model 1979 fuel injected one and some of the plugs I had for it will fit my M103 engine (I have it as a spare in at the moment because number one plug was busted, it is on order).
