Hi all,

I'm getting thoroughly hacked off at how rubbish the Audio 10 CD head unit is in my SLK and am looking into replacing it with an iPod compatible head unit. I would also like to be able to refit the MB stereo if necessary so don't plan to rip out all fibre optic bits (wherever they may be ;))

I've installed plenty of stereos and rewired old Volkswagens in the past so I'm not daft when it comes to wiring, I'd just like to know what's involved on the MB wiring side of life.

Cheers,
Paddy

I've changed the Audio 10 in my SLK to an aftermarket Head Unit, but not an Ipod compatible one. It was simple enough to do as the Audio 10 has an ISO connector on the back so it should be one out-one in.

The only thing I had to do and it may be specific to the head unit I put in was to cut the lead in the multi-connector that feeds the auto volume level control on the Audio 10. With this connected to the new unit, as soon as the car was moving the volume cut in and out and it sounded like I was listening to Norman Collier! After cutting the wire; no more problems. I think the cable I cut was the very small blue one but I can't be sure now as it was a while ago.

I've also fitted an amplifier to mine, mounted underneath the steel plate at the front of the passenger footwell, under the carpet.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I replaced my Audio 10 head unit in my 1999 C class with an Alpine Ipod compatible head unit it was a direct swap, using the standard ISO connectors, there are normally just 2 ISO connectors needed, but on my Audio 10 I had a third with only 2 or 3 cables connected to it, this i left disconnected. I then simply run the IPOD lead into the glove box, where the Ipod sits, out of sight, as the head unit has full control of it, through its controls, searches, displays everything you need.
Check the link out below this is the same as i fitted.
