R170 Wanted!

Hi all

Just returned from a 8 hour roundtrip to pickup a R170 SLK230 Kompressor with "no rust". Apparently, that has a different meaning to some people. Incredibly frustrating.

So, I am looking for a nice R170, any colour, has to be 230kompressor, has to be rust free or nearly rust free and priced accordingly. Its a gift for my hard working wife. If anybody knows of any, please send them my way.

Good luck with this. I have one which is almost rust free and this car apparently won Brooklands R170 show under previous ownership. It was owned by a director of the SL shop who is a well known official MB club member. Unfortunately it's not for sale. However l can give you a guide price if you want to pm me. It wasn't cheap but boy have l had some enjoyment from it. Still love it to bits and I've genuinely enjoyed every mile I've driven.

I know the chap! I have had a few R170's in the past, last one was 5 years ago and got rid but should have kept it.

Yes, thought you might know him. Actually the car was registered to his wife. Since purchasing it I've had a little bit of work done by my local indy, new thermostat, new tyres and a replacement lateral acceleration sensor. The car now drives perfectly. I hope you'll be able to locate one as good as this. I looked at many before seeing this one and l knew instantly it was one of the best out there and the only one l could find without rusty arches and tons of mud inside the arch lips. I may sell one day and did consider asking the SL shop to px against a lovely R107 l fancied. However I'm keeping for the time being.

There are loads full of rust, some of the prices they ask for a clean one could get me a clean SLK32! (Which I would definitely get if I was in the market)

Yes, every R170 l see tends to display rust, often lots of it. Pricing has to be realistic but l guess good ones will command high prices as they become more rare. Pretty sure l could sell at same price l paid over 4 years ago or even slightly more.

I too have a totally rust free 1999 230 kompressor I bought new for £35k back in the day. 33,000 odd miles on it now, never been out in the rain. It isn’t for sale, but you’re more then welcome to come and see what a virtually as new pre-facelift one looked like back in the day. MissyD is in the house saturday for an MoT on her 124. Very welcome to join us for coffee and a look. It’s currently on the lift in bay 2, up out of the way.

It’s an interesting history really. I bought the car as a gift for my wife for her 30th birthday. She had just accepted the offer of a partnership at the doctor’s surgery she had been working at, so was a bit of a celebration of that. We used the car occasionally for the first few years, but then children came along. The car was not suitable then, but we decided to keep it, as the memories were good. I mothballed the car for ten years, continuing with servicing and keeping it ticking along while in storage. In 2019 I recommisioned the car for her 50th, and she used it a bit again. With lockdown it’s been stored again, but I was thinking of putting an MoT on it soon. The reg is AMG 123T if you want to look at the MoT history. Not many with a ten year break I’m sure.

I think that one eventually sold to a guy who shipped it to Africa for the engine and gearbox. Only thing it was good for really!

Lesson learnt from that. Don't take payment for mechanical work from dodgy people with dodgy cars!
