It's an odd one this. My wife's recently purchased R171 has a space saver wheel but to fit in the wheel well has to be deflated! So it's great that it has a spare but seems you then have to pump it up if you want to use it.

I've subsequently bought a small compressor powered from the auxiliary socket, should we ever need to change the wheel, but that does seem rather strange for this gnarled oldie who only remembers 'proper' full size spare wheels from days past. It's a changing world!:(

Does the R172 have a spare wheel well under the boot floor?

Hi ductman

Yes there is a well with a compressor and some foam for inflating punctured tyres, trouble is once you use the foam the tyre 'so I have been told ' is useless
Very confusing

HI All,
I have a the same issue as sh4ggy, purchased a 2nd hand SLK 2015 R172 partly because it supported a Spare based on the recess in the boot. Of course it was not present, only the repair kit.
But manual clearly shows both the spare Configuration with wheel and tools as well as the Repair kit only setup.
The local Mercedes dealership spares dept were wholly uninformed with the only spare they had in stock too try slightly too large a dia to fit into the recess, they believed from a different model? Expected more from the dealer to be honest....
I have seen online a 2nd hand R171 spare complete with tools in the insert tray for sale. In the photo it looks very like the photos in my manual.
Does any owner out there know if the spare and toolkit were a common part on the R171 / R172 models ?
photo from the advert for the R171 spare is attached for ref.

Question...
Can you get a full size wheel in the boot?
No point carrying a space saver if you have to leave your original wheel by the roadside.

Just found the part number for the space saver:
1724000002

It looks similar to the ones used in r230s and is a 'folding' spare which needs inflation before use.

Hi Blobcat,
Are part numbers available anywhere for the R171 and R172 Collapsible spare wheels [also tools, as car has no jack etc also] to determine if they use the same parts.

R171's are fitted with 16, 17, & 18" wheels. Our first 171 had 16" wheels which you could just get one in the boot. But no chance at all with a 18" wheel, in our current 171.

At some stage around 2015 they fitted an Adblu tank in the wheel well to get Euro 6 approval which meant there was no space for the wheel. Do you have the full wheel shaped void?

I think the R171 uses 12mm wheel bolts and the 172 uses 14mm, so no you cant use a 171 compatible wheel on a 172.
