This happened first time last week - wrote it off as "one of these R230 things" but it happened again last evening and again this morning.

Sequence - car has been sitting parked overnight / all day.
Open boot to put bag in - close again.
Get in car, start engine, lift switch to drop roof and rather than the immediate reassuring dropping of front windows, I get this error on the dash.

Give it a minute (well, probably 10 seconds), try again, same again.

Kill off engine (it's keyless) & open driver's door to completely shut off ignition - close door again, restart & roof drops no problem.

TBH until just now, I thought the message said vario roof open & missed the "please wait" bit

I don't have the handbook here & will look tonight, but meantime, anyone got any ideas?

TIA

Does this only happen after a cold start David, or overnight.

so far, yes. Given each time I've just opened & closed the boot which is powered by the same pump, I was thinking it might be something to do with pressure accumulation (or lack thereof) - as I say I hadn't noticed the "Please wait" bit until I was behind my desk

I have a feeling that these cars no longer have the consumers off as we had on the older ones. My 216 closes down in 7 stages and no messages. I have really caned my SL battery wise and never had a message even with the car in the garage for long periods.

It could just be that the battery could do with a good charge., that is why its asking you to wait.

Good call - I have noticed it's gone into that mode a couple of times of late.

As you say it doesn't give an error message, just stops cooperating.

I'll stick it on charge tonight & see if the thing starts behaving itself & will report back

Sorted

Well, sometimes I look too deeply for problems that aren't really there. As Malcolm suggested, an overnight charge sorted it out. Left it for a couple of days to make sure, but just tried 5 minutes ago (car been sitting there for 2 days) -- works perfectly.

Also note to self - better get to specsavers - I thought the error message said "roof open" when in actual fact it said "roof oper." with the full stop right under the "r" so it looked like an "n"

Mine does this on every start if the car has been left for more than an hour. The rear consumer battery on mine is completely dead. Waiting on a new one in the post.

After the car has been running for 20 minutes the roof operates properly.

Hi. I've just had a 2010 SL 63 and this happened all weekend. The dealer says he'll have it back, but I love the car. Would new batteries sort it. I'm scared to open the boot.

If you are getting the "roof oper. please wait" message, you need to charge the rear battery, that should fix the problem.
