..... As one had the unfortunate event of having this retainer spring part company early this morning and would like to know how the spring reattaches and if it is broken?

Many thanks in advance.

It certainly no longer looks as it should. The protuding "bit" should be turned into a little hook. The hook goes through the backplate slot, rotate the whole Spring 90 degrees, and the hook hangs onto the backplate. Something bad has happened to yours by the looks.

Thanks for the information Uncle Benz, I'm certain this happened while in snow and getting out of the snow when stuck. The TC rendered the car useless and with the TC off I was able to override it but the brakes still tried in vain to stop the wheels spinning, something had to give, looks like it was the retaining spring. MB Grangemouth tomorrow, surely they will be sold separately??

The retaining spring holds the brake shoes...nothing to do with the disc brakes, calipers and the abs.

Too true, I was thinking of the extra vibration and strain causing the spring to vibrate loose and fall out, which is most likely how it came to be. Also the springs do look a little rusty, could have been just a coincidence too :)

Has anyone got the part number for these retaining springs and are they all the same as other model Mercedes?

480 A2304230092 SPRING

They don't look the same as I recall on my 210/203/129.
