I have been running GoodyearAssymetric 2 tyres on all corners for the last few years and the time has now come to change them.
Not so much the wear but their age. I do limited mileage so the fronts, born in 2014 and rears in 2017 both have 4mm or so tread left.
Unfortunately Goodyear have stopped making the rears (on an R18 rim), so I need to look at an alternative.
I can still get replacement fronts from Camskill, and rears off ebay, but the rears date from 2019
I cannot be the first to come across this so am asking if anyone has a alternative with similar specification and grip, comfort and noise characterics
thanks in advance

What size?
The asymmetric 2 is very dated (I’m a Goodyear man myself). It’s on the asymmetric 5 now which, is quite a significant improvement competing with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4.

If you still struggle then Dunlop Sportmaxx are a good shout.

Let's get fresh .

Assy 2 is very old and we've had 3 and 5 since , 4 never existed .

In a tyre reviews 14 performance tyre video the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 came out on top.

For me the rim protection and cheaper price of the Goodyear's does it for me .

So I would investigate the just new out Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 and Michelin Pilot Sport 5 .

look on the general tyre websites to get the spec you are after (grip, wet stop and noise) and go from there based on size.

I had a similar situation last year with my W220, Dunlop stopped making the sport maxx in that size.....which was a great tyre for the car.

Good info - thanks
Unfortunately neither Goodyear Assy 6 nor Michelin 5 come in 285/35 on 18" rims
The Goodyear Assy 3 and 5 have run flat technology - does that not make the saidewalls stiffer and thus the ride noisier/harsher?
Still I will look further into the Goodyear 3 & 5 for real world feedback, rather than just maker puff

Unfortunately it seems Dunlop no longer make the sport maxx in the 285/35 size at all, let alone on 18" rims

I think you are probably right - find the tyre choose the make.I do not want to change the wheel size to 19" rims - the car is not set up for it
The search goes on

Looking around not many companies make that size any more and the ones that do are old versions like the GY Assy 2, Michelin PS3 and Conti SC3

I did notice Falken do the FK510, Uniroyal do the RS5 and Hankook do the Ventus S1 EVO K127 so there are some decent options in the mid range.

I know the Falken has been put on E63 by a forum member or 2 IIRC

more research (find the size; look at the maker) leads me to either Uniroyal Rainsport 5 (I have them on the CLK and they work well) or the Yokohama Advan 105+ (the recently rleased 107 is not available in the size I need)
Any thoughts? any comments?

look at what they offer performance wise (as mentioned) and see what fits for you.

Make sure you maintain load rating.

RF are pants. Avoid!

285/35/18…. That’s on the back of my Supra and it’s a Michelin PS3. Fitted those several times as atbtbe time it was the only reliable option from a limited range. It’s not driven much now.

The PS3 does not like heat cycles and I record about 5.6mm of tread on a new tyre from memory.

I’d recommend the FK510.

After spending hours on ths I think the Falkens are probably the best solution. Comments and reports are good and they seem quiet
Shame that the about to be released FK520 are not made in my size - they do seem to be a step forward
Camskill has them for both front and rear and I will have them sent to my local garage guy for fitting and balancing
God knows what to do when I need replacements in 6 years or so!

One final query do I need to tell my insurers that I will no longer be using tryres recommended by Mercedes? I would hope not, but want to be sure

Thanks to everyone who has chimed in on this - very useful and much help bearing in mind I only think about this every 5+ years!

The tyres on the rear of my SL500 are from 2009, maybe I need to think about replacing them.

go on spoil yourself
But be sure to be sitting down when you see the price. My last set of 4 for the SL cost £562 Todays 4 tyres £680
And they still have to be fitted and balanced and there will undoutedly be an environmental charge for the disposal of the old ones

Budget around £20 per tyre for fitting balancing, new valve and disposal.
No need to inform your insurer you have bought new tyres without Mercedes recommendation.

Not a lot of choice at the moment, I have 285/30R19 on the back of my SL.

Were your 19" rims OEM or are they a later fitting?
If OEM then presumably the suspension was engineered to take that into account.
If a later fitment what difference do the larger wheels make to the ride/handling/noise etc?

FWIW I have Falken 510s on the back our 230 (in 19s) and they do grip well but longevity is a bit of an issue. They don't seem to last long.
