I have been trying to replace the rear mudflaps on my SL350 as the clips on the n/s no longer hold it in place properly - pretty crude fixing in the first place but they have lasted 5 years so far.

However enquiries to MB Parts Departments elicit that these were an "accessory", have no part number and are no longer stocked. The internet shows a number of "universal fitting" mudflaps but I suspect they will fit even worse than MB ones.

Has anybody found a source of new or pattern MB specific flaps?

    Hi

I have still got the flaps off my old R230 which you can have. I *should* have all or most of the horrid fixings for the rear.

Let me know if you're interested.

The clips are sold on Ebay, and good quality at that about a £5 a pack

Orb and Television, thanks for replies and offer. I am really looking for new ones as the problem is with the rubber "blocks" that the bolts within the clips bear onto. I still have all the clips but it seems that the rubber has softened or distorted such that the clips cannot be tightened properly.

I'm still chasing round MB Parts Departments hoping that somewhere can blow the dust off a pair from behind the parts bin. Otherwise I will just have to take them off.

    Thanks again.

I think that yours may have been over tightened distorting the rubber

Could be. Or got caught on a kerb at some stage and pulled off. The other three are fine. I shall keep looking.

Interesting that these clamps have been used since as far back as 1960's and could be longer than that

I had exactly the same problem. The fixings are not available without buying the mudflap 'pack' from MB at £60 ish a pop. The clips on EBAY aren't the same as the MB ones. And the blocks aren't available anywhere I could find.

My solution was to replace the rubber blocks with a 10 mm square hardwood block with rounded corners, the same length as the rubber ones. To stop the screws digging into the blocks, I used a thin copper 'shim' about 2 mm thick. If the blocks aren't too badly distorted, maybe the shim idea alone would work.

    Worked a treat for me.

Works for the SLK too, so it could be a standard MB mudflap fixing technique. And as so often with MB, and particularly SLs, poorly designed.

Thank you, I might try that when the weather gets a bit warmer, too cold for fiddling about even in the garage.

It appears that you cannot buy the MB pack any longer. Mind you £60-odd might have curbed my enthusiasm for looking.
