Chaps,

Can I ask; does anyone know for certain if the PSE pump is responsible for the boot locking control. In other words is anything else responsible for the boot lock not working with the key on top of a central locking failure?

If the central locking has failed you should still (always) be able to open with the key. Nothing else has control.

The key never gets used, so the lock seizes up. It only turns about a quarter (clockwise if you imagine looking down from above) and you need to hold it in that position while operating the boot handle with the other hand. You cannot leave the boot in an unlocked position, so you will need the key each time if the PSE is down.

You may have to "work" the key back & forwards for a while to get it to turn. WD40 will help, but once in, use some PTFE spray into the keyhole as WD will dry up & go sticky

The boot soft close and locking is often the valves in the lock in the boot. It was thought by many that it was poor suction on the PSE pump, it is not,, there is a very good DIY on this boot lock in Benzworld

Hi Malcolm,

As Spring is wandering nearer, can I get your contact details to arrange that C pillar leak fix when it's convenient (and warmer)?

Car is currently nice and dry under a cover with some moisture absorbing blocks inside. Had to tie string around the cover to stop it flapping madly in the gales mind!

cheers,

Email sent :D:D

Malcolm my friend you are a brave man posting your phone number !
If I may I will hang on to it so I can contact you in the future to arrange to visit for rear leak sealing when the weather improves a lot. There was another member from Guildford who wanted the same so I will track him down and maybe we can come together. Now get that number off or you and Lilian will be inundated !

Yes it did thanks and I have a problem, it is like brand new inside and never had any water anywhere near it

I will remove the pump and run it on its own and check the current drawn

Glad to hear this but remain confused as to the reasons behind the constant fuse blowing (as I am sure you do) I've blown 5 or 6 x 20amp fuses in as many days I reckon. The boot does get 'damp' but as I stated before, I've carried out protective measures to keep everything dry. When I disconnected and removed the PSE I did actually wonder if it was a replacement, since it looked immaculate given my car is an 02.
All seems strange so I await further news and thank you for your help with this! If there is anything I can do then please let me know!!

Hi Malcolm,

Its Pete, we spoke on the phone at the end of last week re my SL55 water damage / PSE pump failure / boot lock failure.

I just wanted to offer you an update for your thoughts:

I've spoken to MB today who have explained that they need to change the failed book lock handle at approx £350 to carry out their investigation into the water leak in the boot.

I can't believe I'm now having to pay for a new boot handle for they're investigation?....last week as we discussed on the phone it was the boot lock which had failed...now its the handle...but could also be the lock....and the expense could easily run away. I'm very concerned that the main MB dealiship can't both diagnose and repair such a simple issue without having to replace parts willy nilly?

I've emailed MB to ask why their diagnosis keeps changing and fundamentally why the previous dealership simply isn't taking these failed repairs more seriously and rectifies the problems.

I'm frustrated and annoyed at this and will keep you posted. Frankly I wish I had been able to show you the car before it went anywhere near MB!

Regards
Pete

here's the latest. 'Television' has worked his magic and replaced my PSE's motor with a spare motor he had and the outcome is that the replacement is running much slower than mine was and will no doubt cease to cause the 20amp fuse to keep blowing. I am now arranging the return of complete repaired PSE and we will keep all posted on the outcome once its fitted back into the car.
Massive thanks to Malcolm. People like this restore one's faith in the kindness of our fellow man. I look forward to meeting him in Spring and shaking his hand.

the end result.....

Televisions handy work has worked brilliantly. after a swap out of a motor running a little higher than the replacement (cause of a fuse blow) my PSE is back from the west country safe and sound and is back in the car, working perfectly! soft close is like new and the central locking is clean swift and perfect. feels like a new car. I am over the moon.

I have put the PSE back in the boot sat on a thin piece of plastic to elevate from the boot floor as suggested.

10 stars and huge thanks to Malcolm for this!!

I think I've missed the Spring meet but I too hope to be able to meet some or all of you guys at the next meet, where ever it is.

Because of people like 'television' others can enjoy their pride & joy when others would rather take the joy away.

I'm glad to have joined the club today. :)

Hi all,

I bought a 2006 SL350 a couple of weeks ago. After I noticed it suffered from the boot leak I treated all of the rubber seals in Krytox, and the dealer I bought the car from had his engineer spend a day carefully following the DIY guide on fixing r230 leaks, especially at the base of the rear window and the C pillars.

However, I do have one question on the C pillar fix which uses pieces of rubber hoses, initially 9" long to shape the rubber seal to the base of each C pillar while the seals cure. Am I right in thinking that once this is done the two pieces of hose should be cut to a shorter length of 1.5" and then those pieces left in situ permanently to help press the rubber seals against the base of the C pillars thereafter?

Thanks,
AJP

Yes in my DIY on this if the seals at the bottom of C pillar are badly deformed, then leave a longer length in while the sealant sets, after a few weeks it can be shortened to just over an inch, any water will pas through the pipe

Thank Malcolm. That is what I thought in order to ensure that the fix is permanent, but the dealer thought the pipe should be removed at the end.
