Hi guys,
An update and request.....
Well, when the cold weather started biting, I chickened out from doing this myself and took the car to PCS in Horndean in Hampshire.
I was impressed with the knowledge and know-how of the guys in PCS. They removed the gear selector plate one morning and I picked the car up in the afternoon. I thought the £120.00 cost was reasonable and was a lot less than I may have paid at the main dealership. However when I drove the car away I noticed the SLS light was on. I didn’t go back right away as I thought it might be a glitch because of what had been done and would disappear ( A bit naïve on my part )But The light did not go out and is still on some 4 weeks later.
My dash readouts show no malfunctions, so is it just the light that is affected and not the SLS system itself? I have booked the car in next week to PCS but would appreciate your thoughts.

Ok - probably will need codes read to find any issue with it. The light will almost certainly need resetting on a dedicated MB code reader.

I have just encountered the same problem, took an RAC man bashing and stomping about to realise it’s broken... I could have told him that, he did not have a clue. It took 7 and a half hours to get my car recovered home just two miles away. I would not leave the car as it would have been vandalised...anyway that’s another story.

The gear selector is stuck in park...

Does anyone know where I can get this replacement lever so that I can take the car to get it fitted? Is there a way of getting it out of park to move it from outside my neighbours house?

Try replacing the brake switch first. Much easier and cheaper than the other solutions. Hopefully the AA man hasn't beggered up the shifter....

MB main dealer or a breakers.

You will need to remove the selector module and dismantle it to release it from park. I have had some luck hitting the tip of the selector whilst pulling it down to park, but not 100%.

You can remove the mechanism inside to prevent it from locking. Or replace the plastic lever with an aftermarket metal one.

Thank you everyone for your advice. Curious how a brake switch can affect the gear selector, but I will give that a try...

In the drivers footwell there's a brake switch which detects when the brake pedal is pressed. It's actually 2 switches. One part of the switch tells the brake lights to come on and the other is used to tell the ECU when the brakes are on in order to turn off cruise and tell the gearbox ECU to release the selector interlock that prevents the shifter from being moved until the brakes are applied.

With ignition on and engine off press the brake pedal and listen for the interlock . If you can't hear it it's probably the switch. If you hear it it's the plastic interlock broken.

It’s definitely the plastic interlock then...:(

Hi Les.
My SL350 is starting to show similar symptoms with the shifter becoming more and more difficult to move away from P into D position. Were you successful fixing the gear shifter? Did you have someone do it for you? anyone who you would recommend - hopefully didn’t cost you much? Thanks. M

Not sure if Les will see your question , I think someone wrote his car off not long after the fix .
