The solution for this to buy a new arial mast, the motor will most likely be fine. You can get a new mast from MB parts I understand it comes with fitting instruction, if you're handy.

There are threads already on this subject. Do a search on the word Arial and relevant posts will appear.

Yes,it does have one, its a recorded fault, normally they stick once bent or very dirty, Just replace the rod section at £15.

As you say, normally they stick once bent or very dirty, thats fair enough really.
It amazes me the number of people who ignore the ariel, let it get completely clogged with road muck and then complain it sticks. I haven't had a external ariel for a few years now but in the 'old days' I would make a point, after washing the car, of getting a piece of kitchen role and sliding it up the mast (up only as down forces muck into the joints) a few times, then run the ariel up and down a couple of times and then do it again until all traces of muck had gone. You can lubricate them but this seems counter productive to me as the lubricant will attract dirt so I never used any. I never had a problem and only replaced the mast once when I bent it.

True what Jberks says, often always ignored, with the rod section half way up or down, you can slide the rods up and down to clean them, the bit that cant be cleaned or straightened are the litle brass springs that lock the rods when extended, causing two sections to jam or stick. The design has not changed since they were invented in the mid 60's. Never oil them as once the oil has got onto the nylon rope, that is the end, with a further danger that the oil will transfer back on to the new rod ass:
