I know the feeling, that long anxious wait :(:(

I have only ever studied rain sensors, I will take a peep on the light ones

Coded

Just this minute returned from the Place in Preston..
He coded the combined sensor BUT
I am still getting an error message..
He says "There is an open circuit on the auto headlight circuit"..
I have double checked the wires are connected and they are...
All I can think of is to try leaving the loom wired as it was originally and NOT alter it to run straight through!
Originally it was
1 - 1
2 - 3
3 - 2

For the rain wiper mod it was recommended i re wire it to:
1 - 1
2 - 2
3 - 3

Just been out and done the wire swap and its not made any difference at all..
Still an error code !!
Do you ever get days when you just wish you had left everything alone and saved time and money ?

It would have made no difference if i had gone to the expense of a new screen..The coding would still have been an issue !
:mad:

After Richard coded my RLS I still had the auto lights error. 5min at my dealership and they had it sorted. Something about the version of sensor it's coded as.

Malcolm, the wipers work as they did before I did the "Mod"..
They arent rain sensitive and the auto headlights dont work..
If I switch headlights to "auto" then they come on irrespective of daylight or not...

Will phone the dealership tomorrow to see if it sounds like they have a clue what they are doing re upgrade..
I seem to recall someone else had an issue with an error message UNTIL they coded the overhead control Panel (OCP)...
Its possible the violet coloured socket in the OCP which is now used for the new sensor isnt "turned on"..

The guy I went to in Preston didnt have STAR..
He used something called "autologic"..See link below:
http://www.autologic.com/en/pages/homeproducts

I suppose its possible it wasnt as "switched on" as STAR..

On the long thread I followed the STAR instructions were as follows:
STEP 1- CONTROL UNIT
BODY
OCP
CONTROL UNIT ADAPT
PERFORM CODING RLS IN CONTR. UNIT SAM-F
ACTUATION
INITIALIZE B38 SENSOR

STEP 2 - FUNCTION COVERING CONTR MODULES
COMPLETE VEHICLE
LIGHTING
EXTERNAL LIGHTING
AUTO DRIVING LIGHT ON & AUTO HEAD ON
SAM FRONT SIGNAL AQUISITION AND......
CONTROL UNIT ADAPTATION

Does this seem like it makes sense?
The guy in Preston could only follow those instructions so far because his layout was different..

The autologic is very good,, but here I suppose we are doing a specialised install so to speak, and this is where STAR cones into its own, when doing these mods and you are programming it will give you all the options that may be on the car, and the choice to activate them or not.

Shame they are good people

I totally agree about their competance Malcolm..
He was open today because he was doing a teaching course and had people from all over the UK in his workshop..
The workshop was very clean and tidy and resembled an operating theatre..
The guy was exactly as you described him and a very nice, friendly chap..
Highly recommended to anyone who is local the them.:D

The End

Just spent well over an hour with an indy using STAR..
He was exceptionally patient...(More so than I was)..
In then end the sensor refused to initialize..
We tried all sorts of permutations and it keeps saying auto light open circuit...

Normally I am a big fan of retro fits (Hence the COMAND NTG 2.5 I had fitted and coded)..
In this case I would say save your money (and patience) and dont bother !!!

I will live with the error message and beep..
I am not spending another penny on it !:mad:

Thanks Pete..
When something like this happens I tend to be extremely short on patience...
You've no idea how tempted i am to get rid of the car.. Illogical as that may appear !!

Gutted for you Simon, I will take a look to see if there is another way, or if you go in via the back door to see what is wrong.

Is any any better Simon, I hooked up to STAR today and had loads of fault codes, the steering adjustment had lost is setting / memory what ever you like to call it, normalized it all and 0K again, but that was not easy and I had to do it via the front SAM. Its says fault with wiper blade heater and washer something or other, they are a pain in the back side, those faults can stay.

Hi Malcolm..
What I find so ****** annoying is the fact that others have done it without issue and everything worked and coded as it should..
I am very reluctant to go to the main dealers and fork out even more money just to be told "It cannot be coded sir, now go away and stop playing with your car"..:mad::mad::mad:

Sorry guys, a bit nosey but intrigued ;)

1, have you tried refitting the old light sensor ?
2, Have you considered another light unit ocp from a breakers? Perhaps a newer model.

The old light sensor has been thrown...
The light sensor I have is brand new from the local MB dealership..
Of course its sods law that I may have bought a faulty one...
The problem is he warned me that it cannot be returned as its a special order..

SAM FRONT SIGNAL AQUISITION AND......

I tried a voltmeter on the pins of the cable and got the following reading:
1 = +12v
2 = +12v
3 = no reading

Yet the forum i got the details from say that the following should apply..

1 = 12v
2 = Ground
3 = signal

Either something is dodgy with my OCP or the readings dont apply till its coded and recognized !

OK if 2 is showing 12v, this could be because it is not grounded, and it cannot work like that.

If you feed 12v on to 1 pin of a headlamp bulb, the other pin will have 12 volt if it is not grounded, and of coarse the lamp will not light, so this is where the problem is

Unplug the sensor and measure the voltage on the pins when it is not plugged in and do an ohms check on pins 2 and 3, one of these pins must be at ground potential, the pin 1 is OK as you have the correct 12v there.

I say do the above be you try grounding a wire

Thank you Malcolm.
Via my phone now so excuse any mistakes.
Would the ground not get switched on with the coding?
God I wish I was nearer to you.
