Hello. Does anyone know how to retro fit the rain sensor system if its possible? What parts are required? Is it just a module? Do I need a sensor? What about the wiring? Is the loom already in place, Any Ideas???

Its for an 05 plate c270cdi

Thanks

I'm sorry, I have no idea but out of interest, why do you want to do it? It's one of the things I can live without.

As a retro fit it is not worth it, I think you need a new windscreen as well.

I can understand why you want auto wipers, you don't have them at the moment and you think your life would be better with them, well my friend you are wrong !
I have auto wipers on my C320 and I wish I had the old wipers from my Rover 800 which had 3 speed settings for intermittent alone, to me auto wipers are a pain in the arse and not worth spending the kind of money that would be needed to install them.
spend your dough on something else

I had them on the last car they are great. Now I dont on the new car. Its a real pain!! :) I have a cracked windscreen so a new one is being fitted tomorrow as this one is cracked so I told them I have rain sensors. I dont know what the differance is but I am hoping they will bring a windscreen that will be able to be fitted and then I can get any missing parts to make a rain system!

Well, I love the sensor on mine. A real driving aid. Ok not 100% perfect, but danm close. If you have the screen, I'd imagine you could add the sensor, though I believe there is some form of calibration required. Ask your dealer as they may be needed to do this.

ok since you are getting a new winscreen seems like your going for it.

i doubt any wiring is in place, however i am sure you need to star to set it up and calibrate the system.

let us know how you go on

Apart from the sensor, they'll also be some wiring/possibly more as you're effectly replacing the intermitent setting on the wiper switch. The wiring might be there (tucked behind the headlining) or may not, but you'll need two really, really good wiring diagram to understand a.what you've got now and b.what you desire. It's a shame that someone like an accessory maker doesn't make a universal kit - possibly because it's more complicated than at first sight?

I had a 406 with a rain sensor some time ago - and when the screen cracked, the sensor comes off and is reused - only difference was there were two small metal pegs bonded on the screen, to which the (old)sensor locks onto . So I don't think you'll get the sensor as part of the screen..

I'd suspect that the wiring will be there. Most mercs have rain sensors so it's cheaper to just make one loom and be done with it. Pull down the light unit and see if there are any spare plugs taped up anywhere.
How it's configured and what you do with the relays however, is beyond my knowledge.
Pop into your dealer and ask for a quick chat with their sparky. They may be helpful.

I hope the wiring is there. I might see if I can pull down the light unit. It would make sense to do one loom I think. Its daft. It was only £80 to add this to the car at manufacture. I suppose its personal preference. The stalk was the same on my prior car. So It cant be that hard......

IMHO I wouldn't bother to retro fit rain sensors. With ours they work when you don't want it to, ie: already cleaned and not, ie: when the screen is a little bit wet but needs a sweep.

I've had several Peugeots with auto wipers and thought it worked well.

However others have commented that the MB system doesn't cancel itself when the ingnition is turned off - so if you get up in the morning and the screen is icy then it'll try to wipe on start-up. That on its own was enough to put me off.

If you do fit it, then I wonder if it would need to be enabled with Star Diagnose?

Rory, you can turn them off, its no different to intermitant wipers, if don't turn them off when you stop and park up for the night, they will start with the car.

must say I agree with this. I think having a variable setting for the wiper speed is much more useful than the auto option which only occasionally gets it right (and wipes a dry screen when you start the car if you forget to turn them off, which envariably means you end up with a nice smudgy stripe across the middle of the screen). It would be nice if it had both, i.e. fully auto wipers or manually adjusted intermittent wipe.

Thanks - I realise that. Of course if it's not raining when you get home then you would (at least I) would forget to turn them off.

The Peugeot doesn't need you to to remember - even if you left them on they won't work again until you turn them off then on. It's done on purpose to stop the wiper motor overheating trying to move frozen wipers.

The sensitivity is apparently adjustable by the dealer using Star Diagnose.

I drove a Honda Accord with auto wipers and that had the sensitivity control on the stalk. Great, I thought. But in practice it was impossible to get it right - we just don't the right consistency of rain!

I can't even see this listed as an option on the current MB website. I didn't realise my C220 CDI (04 plate) had this until driving in the rain and thinking "oooh - that's clever" as the rain increased and the intermittent wipe became less intermittant. My calibration must be spot-on :)

I'm not saying it deosn't work. I just think it would be nice if I could override the car's brain and use my own. I know you can set it to on or on-fast, or you can keep blipping the stork to get it to wipe but it's all a little awkward when you can buy a ford Focus that has fine manual adjustments to the wiper speed. Just strikes me as a clever idea that was not thought through completley.

Just had a price for retro fitting merc rain sensors. £35 for the sensor & £30 for the wire loom. Then check this! £600 to fit it! Can do it yer self ! Just need to find out if there is some control software built it.They have to check it via the computer thingy so he tells me. Sometimes it is, sometimes it's not. I find this odd!! So there you go !! Tis possible

My volvo stays out, though we seldom have a frost, how I hate myself when I can see them stuck to the screen and I want to sart the car, so I am a good one to talk, I think that there is for and against for all of these things.
