Hi,

I have C180 w202 1998, Elegance, now with 73K miles on the clock.

Can anyone help please or at least put my mind at rest to the problem?

Over the last month, I have noticed a rattle noise at low revs and the engine is under some load. i.e. idling with air-con on or pulling away slowly.

The sound appears to be coming from the front of the engine, fan belt area.

Also I have noticed that it's idling slightly rougher than it used to.

The rattle is the same when the engine is cold or warmed up. Whilst at higher revs the rattle disappears and the engine runs smooth, even when accelerating hard.

When you put the steering on full lock the noise gets louder

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

I have changed the serpentine belt (fan belt) tentioner as someone said it might be that.

All the other things connected to the belt (a/c, power steering seem to solid with no movement)

If anyone has any ideas it will be most appreciated.

Mike.

May be someone took it off, if the tensioner has been replaced, then is the damper pulley OK and running true

I have heard of a similar problem before on a c180 and it turned out to be a duff injector.. worth getting it checked on a star diagnostic ..

Sounds like the alternator pulley is shot, got a clutch built in, make a hell of a noise once gone!!

My old 124 with a 111 engine used to rattle when idling. It was the camshaft adjustment unit. I just turned the radio up.

I had exactly the same on a 98 C200 Elegance. I ignored it and I drove the car for three years until I changed the car. The noise never got any worse and it never actually caused a problem. Hope that helps.

Yes that's one way to get rid of odd noises. I shall have to give it go myself.

Another very effective way, that I've found, to get rid of odd car noises, is to leave my wife at home.:D
