New member, can you help. When cold there is a 'orrible tinny rattling sound coming from the  interior transmission tunnel/floor area. you can't hear it in the engine comp, but it sounds just like piston slap (but its definitely not!)
It goes very much QUIETER when warm. The heatshield and exhaust mountings are sound, the noise continues unabated when the clutch is depressed or released.Because of this, I don't think its gearbox related(or am I wrong) as it should be worse as the oil heats up. I love the car, but this is driving me scatty!!!

Are you sure the 'M' shaped exhaust bracked that mounts the exhaust to the gearbox is in real good condition ???... It doesn't take much room at that point to make nasty sounds...

Also Is your car fitted with a Cat ?
If so I've know the cats to break down and the inards rattle......I hope not because they're Very expencive.

Also does your car make the noise when in neutral with the hand brake on ? or is it just when moving.

Thanks for the interest. Yep, it makes the same noise in neutral or in gear, clutch in or out, it is engine speed sensitive, i.e. it speeds up when I do! I checked the bracket, the bolts are overtightened if anything.. Is the exhaust front pipe double skinned? Once the car gets warm, it either decreases or totally disappears! Its like something expands and thats it........

Surely this can only be drivetrain related if the sound speeds up when you do. Have you checked the axle/diff oil?

My fault, the noise happens when the vehicle is stationary with the clutch in or out, and persists when I drive off. It seems to be coming from the front bulkhead/fascia area and is definitely NOT drive train related. I've just changed the 'whiny' diff for a silent second hand one, anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!
