rattling exhaust heat shields

I would like to know what the forum thinks about heat shields on exhaust pipes rusting and coming loose - a common problem on the W124 and others .
The downpipes with cats have a double skin which always seems to work loose and rattle in time --If you buy an after market cat then these are not even fitted -so can they be removed and has anyone done this I wonder ?

I have removed em before and nothing happened . My theory was that there is enough cold air rushing under the car to cool it lol :p I think the heat shields on the bottom of the exhaust and more so on the cats is if you park the car on long grass it doesnt sett it alight as this has been known in the past . Ive experienced the shields braking away from the bolts holding them on and more so on every w210 ive owned . I just fixed em back with larger washers so the bolts didnt pass through .

Thanks for the reply--My facelift 220TE is different from my old 230TE being a 93 model and having the cat and M111 16v engine--the other was 91 model M104 -no cat hence no lagging down the front pipes from manifold which was renwed for around £50 -- this one has twin cats that are in good non corroded condition built into the down pipes-
I have renewd centre and rear boxes so the whole system is good apart from the loose cladding on the downpipes from manifold to cat boxes.
Secured em with jubillee clips for now - but am not happy as it will need a more permenant fix soon ?

What you have said about the down pipes ive had this with nissans were they have like tin covering the exhaust and ive also secured it with big jubilee clips and it lasted for the time that i had the car . It is an annoying rattle from these coverings but the jubilee clips fixed it .

I think I have the answer to my problem--Heat shield tape can be used to replace the worn coverings on the downpipes -its flexible and comes in rolls from racing supply outlets.
