Hello again all

The rear passenger doors on my 89 230te wont stay open on there own?

They also dont seem to open to their full postion?
This has been hapening eversince my lovely wife :x couldnt get them to close on separate occasions.

It sounds like they both made a bit of a racket and refused to close the last few inches and she had to force them shut.

Ive heard of something called a checkstrap mentioned on here could a couple of new ones be the remedy?

Anyway thanks for your support again guys.

I'll lay odds that her "gentle persuasion" has bent the check straps - remove them (gold coloured metal bars between pillar and door) and see if the doors open and close properly.

If so, you can either straighten the ones you have got already and lubricate them or replace with new ones.

Chances are that the springs that keep the doors open at the partially and fully open position are broken. Or that the alloy cage has broken where the springs cantilever around it. THe springs are simply a strip of metal. It is a simple tak to replace the unit. Just 3 10mm hexagonal bolts and a circlip.

How did she manage to muller both doors at the same time :?:

I had the same prob once on a 190, the rear door gave a terrible noise when you shut it, and the "half-way" position didn´t work either. Took the door apart, and replaced the unit with a new one. Now, later with my own car, I didn´t have any door strap at all in one front door on my 380SE. Took the old part from the 190 and tried to fix it, but after having the door opened at least 3 times and unscrewed the alloy cage about 10 times (finally I had to mill and weld in an extra alloy part to guide the strap correctly in the cage) I got a terrible "klonk" every time I shut the door. What did I learn? Don´t try to fix one of those, it´s much more easier and you get a much better result if you buy a new- or in good shape used one. Sorry for the long post, BTW :)
